Ludwig P-86 Snare Throw-Off Chrome Review

(More customer reviews)First things first, if your snare strainer is drilled 2 1/2 in apart, standard for Ludwig snares, this will pop right in. Otherwise you'll have to figure it out. It fit my 1964 Ludwig snare perfectly.
Not only is this a beautiful solid brute with its knurled wheel, chrome, and art deco engraving, it is also a *much*better* machine. It's the neatest snare strainer operation I've ever seen. Just flip that top tab towards you to loosen the snares, flip it back to tighten. You can easily do it while playing, even snap the snares in time, if that's your thing. My teacher broke a strainer doing that, but it wouldn't happen with the P-86.
It really dresses up your snare and works way better, pay the extra bucks. It is simply better than the P-85. It is worth it.

Kickport Soundport for Bass Drum - White Review

(More customer reviews)I'm in the middle of pre-production for a band and had heard about this item. A drummer I know had used one of these and it's been on my list for the past year. I finally picked one up at Guitar Center. In the studio, I've had the experience of duct-taping around the lip of the hole in the front of a bass drum and noticed the improved tone through creating a more substantial hole for the air to exit the drum. This affected the tone of the drum in going from flabby, to tight. The choice in the studio for a drummer has always been- with out without hole in resonant head on kick. So I took this to rehearsal and opened the pack. The directions seem pretty straight-forward. When seeing how you have to roll back the rubber flange before inserting this thing into the hole on the resonant head, I immediately thought, "Why isn't this a two-piece unit?" The back sleeve should snap onto the front flange for easy application. The company provides a reinforcement ring that is cut to a larger diameter than the kickport. The concept is that you place the adhesive side of the reinforcement ring onto the resonant head around the hole. Slit the head in 3 places up to the reinforcement and then force the kickport in to that hole. The struggle is pretty incredible. Without the reinforcement ring, you'd easily tear the head. The problem is, with the reinforcement ring, you are committed to only use this kickport on THAT head alone. Change the head, and you have to buy a new kickport- unless Kickport expects that they can sell you additional reinforcement rings. Only one comes in the pack and when it's used, you're done. Making the kickport a two-piece unit would make it reusable on ANY resonant you desired to.

Bass Drum O's Hole Cutter (Standard) Review

(More customer reviews)This product really doesn't do anything that you can't do with common tools, but it takes the guesswork out of cutting a drum hole. Since I only need to cut a hole once year or two, it was worth the 5 bucks to get it right the first time. The picture of the cutter is pretty self-explanator. Put the pin into the hole which represents the diameter you're going for (the holes are conveniently labelled). Then hold that center pin in place while you spin and depress the end cutter. The end cutter is a little disk, kind of like a micro pizza cutter. The cutter is not particularly sharp (for instance, you couldn't really cut yourself by running your finger over it, but it's more than sufficient for drum head material.
If you want to destroy your drum head, then try to cut it while mounted. For the rest of us, take the head off and lay it on a firm surface that you're not worried about getting marred by the cutter. I used soft corrugated cardboard the first time and it was a little too soft/mushy to get a clean hole in one try (some areas didn't cut through). Not a big deal, I just reran the cutter around the circle, but I think the edge was a little rougher for it.

Dixon 606 Snare Drum Stand Review

(More customer reviews)If you are purchasing this for someone 10 or younger, than maybe. It is NOT very sturdy, and by no means for a serious, experienced drummer. For a child's first very light weight snare, o.k., but it will not grip the snare tightly, nor will it hold it upright if you hit the snare with any real force. It will keep slipping, and loosening, and drive you nuts. I'd pay another $10.00, and get a stand that your child can grow into, so you don't have to lay out more bucks for the inevitable upgrade.

The Strainer is nice but doesn't quite move the snares enough, for me this isn't a problem because I don't and will not use this snareless but it doesn't come off or anything. It does sound good and Is a lot of fun to play, I recommend for drummers on a budget to pick it up.

MG4 Moon Gel Drum Damper Pads Review

(More customer reviews)I've tried the Evans muffle rings. I've tried the Rem-O's. I've tried paper towels taped onto the head. None of them compare to Moongel, because Moongel is the most effective and simple. Not only are they small and easy to apply, but they can be just as helpful as the muffle rings. The great part is the fact that you can alter how much you want to muffle, as well as the drum pitch merely by moving the pad around the head, and closer/further from the center of the head. It's as simple as that, and it leaves much room for custom sound shaping.
The very reasonably priced pack comes in a portable, cute little thingy with 4 Moongel pads inside. Priced at a little over a buck per gel, these are most definiely the best bang for your buck. As a special bonus, they are reusable even after extensive use. All it takes is a simple soap and water wash, and you're good to go again. Considering the fact that each pad can be reused about 5 or 6 times, that's 4 drums muffled for a couple years for a mere 6 dollars! You can't go wrong with RTOM's Moongel, ladies and gentlemen. You just can't.
