Ludwig P-86 Snare Throw-Off Chrome Review

(More customer reviews)First things first, if your snare strainer is drilled 2 1/2 in apart, standard for Ludwig snares, this will pop right in. Otherwise you'll have to figure it out. It fit my 1964 Ludwig snare perfectly.
Not only is this a beautiful solid brute with its knurled wheel, chrome, and art deco engraving, it is also a *much*better* machine. It's the neatest snare strainer operation I've ever seen. Just flip that top tab towards you to loosen the snares, flip it back to tighten. You can easily do it while playing, even snap the snares in time, if that's your thing. My teacher broke a strainer doing that, but it wouldn't happen with the P-86.
It really dresses up your snare and works way better, pay the extra bucks. It is simply better than the P-85. It is worth it.

Ludwig LM400 Supraphonic Snare Drum, 5" x 14" Review

(More customer reviews)This is probably the best snare drum ever made. Every other drum company has built a copy of this instrument, but why bother when the original is still the best? The shell is spun aircraft aluminum, not steel. Chrome does not like to stick to aluminum so most Supraphonics end up with pitted finishes, but it doesn't bother the sound. If aluminum is not to your liking, versions of this drum are available in brass, bronze (both hammered and smooth) and then there's the ultimate black chrome plated brass shell "Black Beauty".
As a band director I have bought one of these for every band room I worked in that didn't have one already and I own one myself. They are easy to tune, easy to fix and parts are readily available if needed.

Ludwig 5-piece Junior Drum Set with Cymbals Black Review

(More customer reviews)Compared to some of the cheesy, 1-step-up-from-WalMart kids' drum sets I have seen, the Lud Jr. is outstanding. This is the first kids' set I have seen that actually looks, feels, and sounds like the real deal. Even with the stock heads (admittedly lower quality, but easily replaceable), it tunes up nicely and sounds like real drums (a very small pillow placed inside the bass drum really improves its sound). The snare drum especially is of great quality- it even has a real throw-off (as opposed to lesser kits that have a snare "rake" under the top head.) The hardware is sturdy and is scaled nicely to the small kit, the bass drum pedal is the real deal with real adjustability like beater angle, and the floor tom legs are nice and short for low settings. The shells seem to be constructed well, with very nice bearing edges for this pricepoint, and our kit's finish (sparkle red) looks like an expensive finish rather than the "plastic" looking finishes on other kids' kits. The cymbals are a bit lame, especially the too-small hi-hats, but I've spent more $$$ on individual cymbals than the price of this whole kit! My son loves it, and so do I. Thumbs up to Ludwig for giving the little ones a big-boy kit to play!

The beater in the picture looks waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay smaller than the one I got. Don't get me wrong it's an amazing product if purchased alone. I got two of these for my Axis longboards cz I wasn't getting enough volume for its beaters. I blame DW for not providing a proper description for this product. They should at least mention that two of these WOULD NOT work on a double pedal. They would get stuck together because of the size.
Do not buy 2 of these if you have a double pedal.

If you own a Ludwig Supersensitive snare drum and have been frustrated trying to find a case that will not only protect it, but also fit the drum perfectly, this is the case to get. Sit the snare drum, with extended tensioning mechanisms facing the corners of the case, and the drum will be safe. The foam lining will go a long way towards keeping your settings, which is important given the Supersensitive's notorious reputation for losing adjustment with the slightest jarring.
I have used this case for both the pre-1969 and the later, modern Supersensitive snare drums, and both models fit.
Strongly recommended and worth every penny.

Ludwig Junior 5 Piece Drum Set with Cymbals (Wine Red) Review

(More customer reviews)I have to say how impressed I am. This is not a "toy" kit. This is a real drum kit. It just happens to be small enough for children to play. I have been a drummer for 25 years and this kit is of the same quality as most of the kits I have ever played. Although I had no trouble setting it up I can understand that many people would like to have assembly instructions. I imagine many people who buy this kit for their child will not be drummers themselves and may not have put together other kits in their life. If you are buying this for your child and you are not familiar with drum kit assembly I recommend putting this together the night before you plan to give it to them, after they go to bed. It took me about an hour to put it together and I knew what I was doing.
With proper tuning these drums sound like a pro kit. It probably won't matter to your child at first, but when they start getting the hang of it you may want to look into how to properly tune drums. The internet has countless sites offering opinions on this subject. Do your homework then teach your child how to tune the drums for themselves.
The cymbal quality is the only thing about this set that is not pro quality. However, for the price, they will be fine as starter cymbals. You can't really expect pro cymbals as well for a total package price of $300. You could easily spend that much on cymbals alone.
We bought this kit for my son's third birthday. He can reach the pedals (which he cannot do on my full size set) and he has been having a blast acting like a little rock star. I'm sure this kit will be all he needs until he is big enough for a full size kit (if he sticks with it of course).

(More customer reviews)i had never played on a Ludwig set before picking this one up. the kit is pretty complete, but i added on another stand with a crash cymbal and a little 10" crash in the center. it took me a while to get the L bracket mounting for the upper toms figured out and adjusted right, but once i got that figured out, i actually prefer the level of adjustment they offer. the stock heads are, well, stock heads and should be replaced with something to your liking. the cymbals are composite, so the sound isnt my favorite as playing on solids, but they're decent. the toms and the bass drum have a good, rich sound however you tune them, but the snare is not my favorite. my advice for the snare, buy a better set of snare wires and mess with the tuning on your head, otherwise, its really rattly and tinny and sort of sounds like a bad, junior high school concert band snare. overall sound quality and projection is surprisingly good. the last show i played was an outdoor deal, on the fantail of the US Navy ship that i am stationed on and i was able to play unmiked and still was able to be heard along with the singer, guitars and bass without a whole lot of sound loss. good buy, just be prepared to buy little upgrade products for the snare and some new cymbals down the road.

Axis AAX-X Single Pedal Review

(More customer reviews)This pedal is fast! Be aware that it takes some getting used to because you almost do not feel it under your foot. For heel down players this is the perfect pedal, and heel up players will quickly come to appreciate the response and light touch this pedal has.
Since I play jazz and acoustic, I replaced the hard rubber beater that comes with this pedal with the Slug Percussion Power Head Jazz Pro Titanium Beater (ASIN: B0002F5G2A). While pricey, this beater makes the Axis even faster. There is another less expensive beater for jazz players, Speed Ball's felt beater (ASIN: B0002F4M02) that is as good (in my opinion) as the Slug Percussion model. For louder music, or for players who bury the beater into the head I recommend getting the Axis Sonic Hammer (ASIN: B0002F7IBM), which will give you all the attack you could want. This beater was designed for the Axis A model, but will work with the X as well. Also consider the Slug Percussion Power Head beater (ASIN: B0002F5G16).
This pedal is easy to adjust, and a dream to play. It's also easy nto upgrade this to a double pedal by purchasing two pedals and the Axis double pedal conversion kit. Interestingly, you can mix and match X and A models, long and short boards with the conversion kit.
Be aware, though, that there is a definite love/hate relationship between drummers and this pedal. I've met rock, jazz and blues drummers who swear by this pedal, and I've met drummers from those same genres who hate it. I personally love it, but recommend that you actually try it at a local store before you buy one.

Pearl P3000D Eliminator Demon Drive Single Bass Drum Pedal Review

(More customer reviews)There's no denying this pedal is one of the best on the market, however, it will take a while to get used to (especially if you haven't played a direct-drive pedal before). I got really frustrated with this pedal for the first two months of using it because there were so many ways to fine-tune it and I couldn't get the setting I wanted. Of course when I finally got it to where it was comfortable, it was amazing- better than anything else I've every tried or owned.
My advice: If you're a beginning or intermediate drummer don't get this pedal. It takes some very tight and well-developed foot technique to make it work well. However, for advanced or expert drummers- this pedal will allow you to maximize your speed and precision to no end.

Ludwig Speed King Single Bass Drum Pedal Review

(More customer reviews)I use a Yamaha Flying Dragon (Direct Drive) set of twins for my two bass drums with that kit. But on my Ludwig Bonham Amber Vistalite I use the Speed King. I also have a 70's original Speed king in my Living room china Cabinet. Basically there is not much difference between the two. Same weight and action. I like a direct drive pedal as opposed to chain(Cams) or straps. On my Ludwig kit I find myself backing my foot off the pedal and droping it down and mainly working it with the ball of my foot for the fast response. So far is has held up fine, but if it breaks I will probably want another one because for the single bass action I really enjoy it! The Yamaha pedals like much of todays modern pedals are heavier and are a kind of different thing I think. On my 24" Maple kicks I would use those actually. But for the felt beater and a 26X14" kick the speed king is a groove!
