Alesis DM7 USB Kit Five-drum, three-cymbal drum kit with USB-enabled drum module Review

Alesis DM7 USB Kit Five-drum, three-cymbal drum kit with USB-enabled drum module
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This kit blows the competition out of the water! All of the included drum sounds are studio quality and can be edited to your liking. The module is very user-friendly, which makes customizing your own kits a breeze. The initial setup only took about fifteen minutes and everything was included, except for stereo adapters (and no throne or bass pedal, but I had those already). The pads feel much more true to an acoustic set than the electronic kits I tried out at my local music stores. Plus, they are so silent that my set is in a room with an aquatic turtle and he doesn't even scoff at them. I would definitely recommend this over the other electronic drum sets in the same price range. I've played the dm6 and the sound quality is not even close. the Roland HD-1 is nice because it's small but the sub-par sounds and the lack of customization options made it feel more like a toy when I played it. The Yamaha Dtxplorer seemed pretty close in comparison, but it didn't feel real enough for me. So there you go! For around $600 you cannot go wrong with the dm7. I love everything about this kit and a part of me wishes I had gotten one of these before I got my acoustic kit.

Alesis USB Studio Drum Kit Five-Piece USB Drum Set Review

Alesis USB Studio Drum Kit Five-Piece USB Drum Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not too happy with this set- for me, Roland was way better.
First, if you think you're getting an electronic drum set that also has a USB connection - you're mistaken. You ONLY get a USB connection. That means you can't just plug in a set of headphones and start playing. There's nothing to plug into- the included midi controller is just that - and nothing more.
Next problem and most important, is this concept of crosstalk - which is when the sound of one drum triggers when you hit another. In fact, if you just bump the stand with a stick it can trigger several drum sounds at once. Alesis had a useless solution already for this, they call it a feature (a knob on the MIDI controller to adjust the sensitivity, which had little to no effect for me, rendering this set pretty useless for my needs.
Third, how nice of them to include a light pair of drums sticks - unless you'd like a pair a bit more professional - in which case, decent sticks with a bit more weight will do almost immediate damage to the drum skins - my advice- stay away!

I just purchased a DM10 Studio kit and am upgrading the 8" floor toms to 10" for a more authentic size and feel (the 8" pads are okay for the rack toms, but pretty small for floor toms). Great feel - much better than rubber pads.

DW Drums Eco-X Kit with 22-inch Kick Drum, Desert Sand Finish (Cymbals Not Included) Review

DW Drums Eco-X Kit with 22-inch Kick Drum, Desert Sand Finish (Cymbals Not Included)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the ECO-X set, not thru amazon.com but thru DW specifically. An when I put them together and added some Remo pinstripe heads on them I was blown away from the sound. I own 2 DW set's already but wanted to give the ECO-X a try and I'm so empressed. Im a huge maple fan but never owned a birch set especially with bamboo. The sound was warm and fat, and the look is great also. So drummers out there give them a try you wont be dissapointed.
P.S. The desert sand finish is great!!!

DW provides drummers with yet another sonic option, while at the same time utilizing renewable resources, that's ECO-X. They are big, full sounding drums with a huge fundamental, and all of the warmth, resonance, and attack that Collector's Series drums are known for. This DW Eco-X 5-piece drum shell pack not only satisfies drummer's needs with its huge sound, and full frequency range, but it also satisfies our need to be environmentally conscious. The unique hybrid bamboo/birch shells provide increased high-end attack, while DW's X Shell technology offers unprecedented low-end response. Plus, DW drummer-friendly features such as True Pitch Tuning, STM (Suspension Tom Mounts), Proportional Counter Hoops and DW Heads by Remo USA all come standard. It's a giant leap forward in shell technology and everyone wins!At DW, making drum shells sound better is what they do best. The X Shell technology all started with DW's foray into VLT, or Vertical Low Timbre Technology. They found that in experimenting with alternate ways to cross-laminate a shell, the tension on the shell could be greatly decreased if the majority of plies were run vertically, rather than horizontally. Just like a guitar string, the tighter it gets, the higher in pitch it goes.Drum shells must be cross-laminated for strength, so the idea of designing a completely vertical shell to achieve optimal low frequencies was never an option, until now-enter X Shells. The concept was derived from DW's popular line of VGE (Vertical Grain Exotics). DW had been laminating veneer in a diagonal orientation for a while, but had never considered the sonic benefits until Master Drum Designer John Good proposed it, "If we can mimic the effect of a complete VLT shell, we'll have created the lowest sounding drum ever." The first prototype was made and the result was a home run. Exactly what Mr. Good had anticipated, big, full sounding drums with a huge fundamental, and all of the warmth, resonance and attack that DW Collector's Series drums are known for. Cymbals and hardware not included.

Alesis Electronic Cymbal Trigger for DM5 PRO Kit Review

Alesis Electronic Cymbal Trigger for DM5 PRO Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to get this cymbal for my Rock Band ION set. I have to say it's an awesome add on. In my opinion, this cymbal is a bit quieter than the ION cymbals that come with the set. The overall quality of the product is great and the size is great. You end up saving a couple of inches from the back if you're worried about storage space when you're not playing or if you're playing against a wall (remember you can use the IONs as a real drumset or play Rock Band on freestyle)... then again, the ION cymbals are huge compared to this one so you'd have to have all 3 to actually save some space.
I hadn't played Rock Band with cymbals until I got the ION set and I have to say it adds a lot to the game. It's more realistic and much MUCH harder to play the game... and you look a hell of a lot cooler! You won't get any sign or cue of when you should hit the cymbals so it's ok if you hit the pad when it's a cymbal hit and vice versa... I guess you just have to feel when you're supposed to hit it or learn when. I hope this gets taken care of in Rock Band 3 or in a patch for Rock Band 2. I haven't learned any of the songs by memory so I still have to look at the colors on the screen, so it's confusing to have the green cymbal (crash) on the left and the blue one (ride) on the right. Of course I can just swap them but I'm going for the traditional drum setup so it's just a matter of choice.

Alesis SR18 Drum Machine with Effects Engine Review

Alesis SR18 Drum Machine with Effects Engine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the SR-16 and out of all the drum machines I ever owned it was the most user friendly so when I noticed the new SR-18 I had huge expectations, basically this is the same machine but they have made some very weird changes, my first complaint is you have to save every single thing that you do, they took this to the point of being completely ridiculous, every single edit you make must be saved I am not kidding. and then something weird; I noticed that whatever tempo you decide to play a pattern in it is automatically saved, one of the least important things (to me anyway) so now every pattern has it's very own tempo, that just seems strange to me, one thing I liked about the SR-16 was when you wanted to change the length of a pattern you were give the option of taking bars off the end or the beginning, the SR-18 is like every other drum machine and you can only cut off the end, the SR-16 also had an output to dump all of your data onto a tape or cd (or whatever you prefer) so then you never run ot of memory, The SR-18 does not have this cool feature either, the sounds are good, lots of cool presets but drum machines still have a very long way to go before I will get too excited, I thought this was supposed to be an upgrade. ?

The next-generation Alesis SR18 drum machine is loaded with cutting-edge drumsets, electronic drums, one-shot hits, and modern percussion sounds--from hip-hop to country and everything in between--for any cutting-edge musician's performances and compositions. It also offers an effects engine with Alesis reverb, EQ, and compression so you can output recording or performance-ready sounds. And Alesis' exclusive Dynamic Articulation feature enables a drum sound to change its tonal content as it's played harder--just like an acoustic drum--for truly realistic performances.
You can plug in an instrument, such as a guitar, and play along for setup simplicity. You can play in bass parts using the pads on the SR18 or connect a MIDI keyboard for fast, musical low end. The SR18 can be powered by AC or batteries for on-the-go composition
Key Features
Large, 32 MB sound set with percussion bank and bass synth
Over 500 drum and percussion sounds and 50 bass sounds
Built-in Alesis effects: reverbs, EQs, and compression

Programmable Drum Roll function
Mute/Solo Function: mute drums, bass, and percussion or individual pads

Backlit LCD
100 preset patterns, 100 user locations

Dynamic Articulation Discerning ears will notice that each sound is actually a series of different samples; multiple dynamic-level samples and articulations are all built in so as you play harder and softer, the drum or cymbal changes its timbre, not just its volume. This engineered realism is known as Dynamic Articulation, an Alesis exclusive.
This results in sounds that respond accurately not only to dynamic changes, but also with the appropriate timbral and color changes you'd expect from their acoustic counterparts. You can play with or without reverb for different room sounds and enjoy a wide variety of rimshots, rim clicks and different stick-placement sounds on the cymbals. The Random Sample feature also ensures you don't get the same sound twice for further creative realism.

Roland TD-10 Drum Brain Module with EXPANDED TDW-1 Expansion Card Review

Roland TD-10 Drum Brain Module with EXPANDED TDW-1 Expansion Card
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted a TD-20 but the price was more than I could afford, sound familiar? Well I had to have the 6 pc. layout and it was offered in the TD-10 in the same sizes as the TD-20. I found a TD-10 for a fair price but the pre-loaded sounds and the
cymbal control was lacking something. I looked on line and found a guy selling TDW-1 EXPANSION CARDS. After reading what was on Roland site about what this card would do,I put one in mine and was blown away. It was like getting a whole new module! Fifty new kits and over 300 new sounds with the V-CYMBAL control options now gives me power to use the new triple trigger cymbals. It added fader controls for all groups instead of three, trigger locking and V-EDIT options galore. The upgrade
was about three hundred bucks and after your done with everything,it is about $800.00 inc the module. Amazon has the best deal going if you are looking at getting one of these,I should have looked there first but had no idea they sold these. After spotting it there,it was a less expensive way of getting a TDW-1 TD-10. Amazon always has the best prices so before you look elsewhere for the something you think they don't have.............LOOK FIRST AT AMAZON ANYWAY!

Gibraltar 6608 Throne Moto Style Review

Gibraltar 6608 Throne Moto Style
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been using a broken throne for over a year. It wasn't mounted well since it had broke and was wobbly and all of that. I finally realized it was time to get a new one. I did some research and found this Gibraltar one. I have been an extremely satisfied Gibraltar hardware customer for years. I have almost all Gibraltar Hardware for my entire set, as well as one of their racks. So I figured I'd try this throne. After having it for a few weeks now, I can't believe I waited so long to get a new one. This one is super rock solid built. Very sturdy, and extremely comfortable. Adjusts pretty easily, but once adjusted, it will never let you down by moving or readjusting. It not only has a regular tightening knob, but also a seperate additional locking mechanism that you can hand tighten with your drum key (same one you would use to tighten the drum heads, hardware, etc). This throne does not wobble, tip, or let you down even under the hardest playing experiences. Whether you a hard rock or metal guy who needs a super strong throne so you can give it all your weight so your legs can give your double bass drum pedals a work out, or you are a jazz muscian that just needs a comfortable balanced seat, you cannot possible go wrong with this throne.

Alesis DM10 Pro Kit Professional Electronic Drumset Review

Alesis DM10 Pro Kit Professional Electronic Drumset
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing this kit and experimenting with the drum module for about a week now. It's my first electronic kit, but I have played on others. This is a quality kit in almost every detail. Set up was a little bit involved as far as assembling the rack and placing trigger pads and cymbals, but I was up and drumming in about 45 minutes.
I rated this 4 out of 5 stars only because I did have an issue with the Surge 16" ride cymbal; the bell trigger didn't appear to be working. I called Alesis and got excellent help after a short wait. It turned out I had to go in to the settings (hit the "ext trg" key), select the ride bell trigger and change its input type from 'switch' to 'piezo'. This could have been set at the factory or been detailed in the user's guide for the cymbal, and save Alesis Tech Support and me some time. Also be sure to disable write protection on the module, so you can save this setting and any others you make. Instructions for this are in the user's manual which brings me to my next point.
The only documentation that came in the carton were the quick start guide (QSG) to assemble the set and the QSG's for the Surge cymbals. I had to download the user manual (among others) for the DM10 module from the Alesis website. It seems to me that you would rate a hard copy of the manuals for the price of the system.
Overall its a great system and I would buy it again if I had to do it over.

With lightning-fast, highly accurate tracking, the widest dynamic range of any module, and incredibly drummer-friendly operation, the Alesis DM10 drum module has the most realistic, natural sound set available in any drum module. And now with this Pro Kit, it's been paired with Alesis' RealHead drum pads, SURGE Cymbals made of real cymbal alloy, and an ErgoRack mounting system--perfect for getting a live performance feel to your recordings.
The DM10 drum sound module contains true drum, cymbal and percussion sounds, built from real samples of classic studio drums and prized cymbals. Drummers will find some of the most in-demand acoustic drum sounds from legendary drum brands, a huge arsenal of top producers' go-to snare drums, real American, Canadian, Chinese, and Turkish cymbals, and a choice selection of classic drum machine and electronic percussion sounds that have fueled the biggest hit records. You can also load new sound sets via USB connection from your computer, so that your drumming sounds never go stale.

Key Features
DM10 drum module with 12 trigger inputs and mixer
RealHead acoustic-feel 8-inch and 10-inch dual-zone drum pads with real heads
SURGE Cymbals are alloy acoustic cymbals with triggers
12-inch SURGE Hi-Hat, 13-inch SURGE Crash with choke, 16-inch SURGE Ride with choke
Ergonomically curved, chrome-plated ErgoRack
Premium instrument library sampled from real drums and cymbals
Dynamic Articulation changes sounds' timbre along with dynamics for realism
Sound-set loading and use with software drum modules, both via USB
Play along and record yourself with the sequencer
Mix input for practicing with CD and MP3 players

RealHead Drum Pads This Pro Kit includes acoustic-feeling RealHead pads in eight and 10-inch sizes, and these dual-zone pads feature real mylar drumheads and real triple-flanged counterhoops for an excellent drumming feel. The snare and tom pads are dual zone, enabling you to perform rimshots, rim clicks, or assign other sounds such as wind chimes, cymbals, gongs and cowbells on the tom rims. You can use virtually any single or double kick pedal with the RealHead Kick Pad, or split the DM10's kick input with a Y-cable and connect an optional second kick pad for the pedal feel you prefer.

Surge Cymbals The best choice in electronic cymbals, the Pro Kit includes the following SURGE cymbals: a 12-inch SURGE Hi-Hat, a 13-inch SURGE Crash with choke, and a 16-inch SURGE triple-zone Ride Cymbal with choke. Comprised of a genuine alloy cymbal coated with a clear sound-dampening layer, SURGE Cymbals feel like acoustic cymbals because they begin life as just that. The Crash and Ride cymbals feature large choke strips on the undersides for even more attention to accurate cymbal control. The SURGE Ride also features multiple-zone triggering on the bell, face and edge. The SURGE Hi-Hat Cymbal offers continuously variable control using the included pedal.
ErgoRack Putting it all together is the Pro Kit's ergonomically curved, chrome-plated ErgoRack, which is large enough to enable you to add on additional drum pads and SURGE Cymbals. You can even mount acoustic drums, cymbals, and percussion instruments on this roadworthy system.
The ErgoRack employs standard one and one-half-inch tubing for compatibility with virtually all drum manufacturers' rack hardware. The rack features quick-release, metal clamps for fast setup and tear down. The Crash and Ride cymbals mount on large, knurled boom cymbal arms that are height adjustable right in the rack down tubes. The DM10 Pro Kit comes with tom mounts that enable freely adjustable mounting. Drummer-friendly wing-screws are present on all important rack clamps and pads for ease of adjustment without reaching for a drum key.
DM10 Inputs and Outputs The DM10 module has 12 trigger inputs, perfect for creating custom configurations. You can use it with virtually all drum and cymbal pads and acoustic drum triggers thanks to easy-to-configure trigger settings. The DM10 also has full MIDI implementation so if 12 trigger inputs aren't enough to accommodate your giant setup, just add the optional Trigger I/O.
The DM10 accommodates both continuous and switch (open/closed) hi-hat control pedals. You get full MIDI implementation including both MIDI In and Out for working with traditional MIDI gear along with the USB jack, which can also send MIDI to your Mac or PC. The DM10 also has a stereo Auxiliary input for connecting line-level devices like a CD player or iPod so you can play along.
The DM10 has two stereo pairs of 1/4-inch outputs for main and auxiliary feeds, so you can send separate mixes to the house and monitor systems. This enables you to send the metronome or a loop to the monitor mix and not to the audience mix. There's also a high-powered headphone output with its own volume knob. For managing everything easily, there's also a top-panel mixer.

Alesis DM10 Studio Kit Professional Six-Piece Electronic Drum Set Review

Alesis DM10 Studio Kit Professional Six-Piece Electronic Drum Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For some crazy reason, I decided to start drums. I have a small home studio and play some guitar and getting drum tracks into the music I create has always been a problem. I know I could have gotten a (better?) acoustic kit for the same price, but by the time you add mics to get it recorded, it ends up being more expensive. And with Electronic drums you have an endless array of sounds available and the ability to edit your performance after the fact. So anyhow, for my purposes, this kit seems very good.
I read a couple of posts on the internet and expected it to take between 45 minutes to an hour to set up. 4 hours later I had a roughly organized initial setup. I had never played drums before and had no idea where I wanted things to be. I ended up having to reverse some mounts to get the drums in the position I think they should be. There is a curved bar for the front top - it was unclear in the very limited setup directions which way this bar should be mounted. I have no idea if I have it correct or not, and it would take another hour to change it if it is wrong. The setup directions need to be a lot better. The supplied wiring seems short in places. If the supplied wiring can only be attached one way, then the directions should show you that one way, and they don't. The hihat pedal is also not as responsive as I would expect. I have read that the Roland hihat pedal will work with this kit and is a better choice so I probably will get one and use it.
The other electronic aspect I have not been able to solve yet is that the kit is supposed to be able to use the USB connection to transmit and receive midi. I have yet to get that working on a PC, but I have heard that it works on a mac. Perhaps Alesis is just behind in getting proper PC drivers out for it.
Other than that, the brains (DM-10) has very good sounds and very good adjust-ability for sensitivity and response.
The drums themselves play fine. The good news is that there are instruction for mods on the internet that will allow you to convert these to much better drums, for about $12 each. At that point, for $999 + ($12 x5) = $1060 you have the equivalent of some $2500+ electronic kits. As I get a little better with my playing, I plan on making those mods.
Alesis should really consider splitting package into 2 separate boxes to make shipping easier (via common UPS etc). The problem is a single box weighs 75lbs and that exceeds the UPS limit. Freight shipping was a nightmare. It went through at least 3 different companies, the final which refused to deliver to a residential area with their large trucks. I ended up having to go pick these up myself after paying $160 for shipping. No store within 3 hours drive plans on stocking a kit like this, so shipping was the only option. I still feel ripped off to pay that much for delivery and have to go pick it up myself at the shipping companies convenience.
Bottom line - Great kit. Good feel, excellent potential. Perfect for my small studio.
