15" Authentic Handmade African Talking Drum - Traditional African Musical Instrument Review

15 Authentic Handmade African Talking Drum - Traditional African Musical Instrument
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this for a higher price from a different seller than the one currently advertised, but am very satisfied with the drum. It arrived well packed in bubble wrap and in good condition, except for a loosened knot which was easy enough to fix. This is a great drum to have fun with since one single instrument can produce so many different pitches instantly with just a squeeze of an arm. It will be a good classroom prop if we happen to discuss African tone languages and talking drums in phonetics class; it could also be used to illustrate how taut vocal folds produce a higher pitch and relaxed ones a lower pitch. Demonstrations of how to play the drum can be found on YouTube. Recommended.

Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka 8 Inches Review

Schalloch Aluminum Darbuka 8 Inches
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've ever considered wanting to learn Darbuka or are looking for a reasonably priced goblet drum with a price that might seem like a steal, this drum is exactly it. Had I known this drum was being sold at this price years ago I would've been rattling and rolling my fingers over the drum head of this wonderful instrument long ago!
I was skeptic at first that a drum that I've heard and learned so much about could go for a price like this without some kind of repercussions of it being faulty or something similar of the sort-- I was wrong! This drum is fabulous, despite the fact that there are known 'professional' darbukas out there that exist, this is still a wonderful instrument at an amazing price that won't disappoint.
It offers great range of sound with sharp, resonant 'teks' and heavy, bass-filled 'doums' and rimshots on this piece come out clear, crisp and loud.
Though I may acquire several 'upperclass' darbukas along the way, I honestly believe this drum alone is going to be a long favored item by me, as it was and always will be the reason I got into darbukas and hand drums to begin with. It's served me well, still serves me well and if there's any doubt in your mind about this drum, relinquish such thoughts because this drum will not disappoint you.Users Note: Remember to tune the head ever so often, as punishing blows with average use will hinder the drum and you'll notice it by the way it sounds. The drum will begin to sound muted, dull, a little bland but give the drum a good tightening of the heads and you're back to base one with sheer bliss of this drum's outstanding quality.
A mind-blowing purchase, really.

HQ 6in Reversable Practice Pad Review

HQ 6in Reversable Practice Pad
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the perfect practice pad. It has two sides: the silenced, very bouncy one; and the harder, louder, more realistic-feeling one (in terms of snare). The 6 inch is also extremely portable. I highly suggest getting this one instead of the 12 inch one because the 12 inch one is humongous and unbelievably heavy. This also has no rim, which I like. Most of the people I talk to also agree that this is a great pad, so I know I'm not the only one who loves it!!

Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Quadropad Large Review

Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Quadropad Large
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have mostly good things to say about this pad. The only down side is that when I put the film sheets onto each pad (to make them more realistic for scrapes and what not) it made them a lot louder. For a pad, I was surprised as to how loud it became. It almost like hitting a piece of plastic. I feel like it also detracted from the more natural bounce that it had before putting on the plastic films. Be cautionary when you put them on. Just put on one at first and play on it for a while to make sure you like the feel.

First Act FA554 Discovery Band in a Bucket Review

First Act FA554 Discovery Band in a Bucket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this as it was cheaper than Kmart, which had it for $[...] here in Hawaii. The brand is First Act. These are meant for older children, but with proper supervision, I felt most of the stuff in it was okay for my toddler to use.
My daughter goes to Music Together classes, and I got this so she would have some musical instruments to play with at home when we listen to the music from the class.
She loves the tambourine and the fish and drumstick. She also likes the egg shakers and the spoons. I don't let her have the harmonica or the kazoo as she's too young to use it.
The tambourine is very sturdy. Even after getting whacked repeatedly with the fish, spoons and the drumstick, it doesn't look damaged at all. The jingle sound from the tambourine isn't that great though. The sides are made of wood, and the top part of the tambourine looks almost like thick paper or some kind of animal skin. If you look on the underside of the "skin" there are little pinpricks there that leads me to think it could be some kind of animal skin, but I can't really tell. It is painted white on top, and there is a blue fabric ribbon glued around the edge. The "coins" on the sides seem kind of cheap looking and to be made out of some dull tin material that doesn't sound that great.
The wooden fish and the wood drumstick I think are meant to be used together, and it makes a decent "tock" sound when tapped on. There is a little fish drawing on the drumstick, which itself is the thickness of a cheap wooden spoon you'd find in your kitchen. The stick is also quite short, probably not longer than 6 inches. The fish is hollowed out and has some small detail that makes it resemble a fish. It is also clearcoated with some kind of paint. It is also very sturdy. There are some very small dents on it from my daugher pounding it with the spoons.
The egg shakers are cute and small and look hand-painted rather thickly where you can't see the joint on them. They have a nice soft shaker sound to them. I think I use them more than my daughter. I'm a little wary of the paint since it was made in China, so I just make sure that my daughter doesn't put them on her mouth. They aren't small enough to fit in her mouth, but she might try to suck on them so of course I supervise accordingly.
The spoons are interesting and I haven't figured out how to use them. They are two spoons embedded in a wooden handle. I can tap them on the ground, which makes the tapping noise and the spoons clack together. I have also clacked them together by pressing the spoon handle parts, and that makes a soft metallic clicking noise. My daughter likes to pound the tambourine with the spoons too.
The harmonica is small but sounds pretty good actually.
The kazoo which is blue, we haven't opened yet. The plastic kazoo comes in this small ziploc pouch thing that is affixed to the booklet. There is a ziptie on the ziploc part of the pouch, so I can assume that it is clean (but I will probably clean it with Anywhere spray when I open it). It comes with an instruction book on how to play the kazoo and has a bunch of songs that you can try. The book goes into detail about reading music, but doesn't really teach you if you don't know anything about reading music. It explains the rythym but not the pitch. At the back of the book, there is a little certificate for completing the lessons.
Since all of the parts were made in China, I made sure to clean them, and I also use Clorox Anywhere spray to kill the germs on it. I wipe them dry after two minutes and before giving them to my daughter.
Overall I like this a lot. My daughter really seems to enjoy using the instruments which are similar to those she gets to use in class. The shipping was almost ten bucks to Hawaii, but somehow that amount was reduced to 3 bucks when I purchased it together with some items that had free shipping from Amazon. It took a while to get here, but I felt it was worth it.

These are so small, they are almost like miniature models of real bongos. Actually, I thought there was a mistake when I opened the box, like I had received a set of bongos for Smurfs or something! The picture here on the website is pretty much the actual size.

Beato Pro 3 Deluxe Cymbal Bag Review

Beato Pro 3 Deluxe Cymbal Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very happy with the sturdiness of this bag and the individual slots that separate the cymbals so they do not bang against each other.
My only disappointment was the gold BEATO logo was missing from the bag - and there was what appeared to be chalk marking on the outside of the bag that someone attempted to erase.
After a thorough check of the rest of the bag I decided to keep it.

I've never owned a drum pad before, but this is definitely a good product. It has much bounce on the grey side, like a real marching snare, and a little less on the hard black side which really helps build your chops. Over a very good buy.

BeBoP Childs Rainbow Rhythm Percussion Set with a FREE CD & Songbook Review

BeBoP Childs Rainbow Rhythm Percussion Set with a FREE CD and Songbook

This is a great instrument set for young children. It's colorful, each instrument is easy to play and they're very durable. It comes with a CD and booklet so parents that aren't musicians can help their kids do more than just shake everything. You can actually match the rhythm of the music and teach kids to play along, keeping time to the CD. I'm a big believer in introducing children to music and rhythm at a young age and this set is perfect!

GP Percussion B2 Pro-Series Tunable Bongos 6 & 7 Inch (Clear Finish, Hickory) Review

GP Percussion B2 Pro-Series Tunable Bongos 6 and 7 Inch (Clear Finish, Hickory)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We got these for my dad as a birthday gift. I was skeptical about them being up to his standards as he's a trained percussionist from his youth and although he has since gone into a more professional career as an adult he still knows whats-what when it comes to anything drums.
And.... he LOVED them. He was surprised that Amazon carried such a professional brand. He said they were better than the set he already had.
What do you get the guy who has everything? Something he already has and loves, of course!! So he has now started a small collection of bongos and likes to have jam sessions with family and friends whenever possible... and having more than one set now makes this possible.
I may have to buy myself a set so I can practice for our future jam sessions! :)
