15" Authentic Handmade African Talking Drum - Traditional African Musical Instrument Review

15 Authentic Handmade African Talking Drum - Traditional African Musical Instrument
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this for a higher price from a different seller than the one currently advertised, but am very satisfied with the drum. It arrived well packed in bubble wrap and in good condition, except for a loosened knot which was easy enough to fix. This is a great drum to have fun with since one single instrument can produce so many different pitches instantly with just a squeeze of an arm. It will be a good classroom prop if we happen to discuss African tone languages and talking drums in phonetics class; it could also be used to illustrate how taut vocal folds produce a higher pitch and relaxed ones a lower pitch. Demonstrations of how to play the drum can be found on YouTube. Recommended.

I bought this as a simple alternative to handbells in my compositions. It sounds nice, and the mallets are great. I wish it had an extra octave or two lower, but perhaps that will be included in a future model. I'd recommend it.

GLS Audio Professional Microphone ES-57 Review

GLS Audio Professional Microphone ES-57
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this mic as a decent alternative to my crappy vocal mic's. I needed a mic for recording and some live performances, but primarily for instrument use. I heard about this mic as a good one modeled after the famous SM57 but at a fraction of the price.
I recorded a quick acoustic thing as a sample for a dance performance and when I listened to it play back on giant speakers, I was literally blown away by the lack of static sound I heard. I did very little post recording work, just some levels to make everything louder and about the same, but no noise canceling and it turned out amazing.
I would absolutely recommend this mic for someone that wants good to great sound but with a limited budget. I plan on buying more, maybe even the vocal mic too.

Toca Synergy Freestyle Mechanically Tuned Djembe Abstract Red 14" Review

Toca Synergy Freestyle Mechanically Tuned Djembe Abstract Red 14
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a full-time professional musician. I'm a multi-instrumentalist playing guitar, bass, accordion, harmonium, and percussion, but my main instruments are piano and organ. This drum is just perfect for someone like me. I went with this djembe because of the lightweight, artificial body and mechanical tuning (didn't want to have to deal with the ropes). But the fact that it features an authentic goatskin head gives it fantastic tone. The lows are thunderous, and the snaps and slaps cut like crazy with no resonant overtones.
You can get so many different tones out this drum. Be sure to experiment with all the different parts of the head and different hand strikes (open palm, cupped palm, fingers, etc.) It really is like having an entire drum kit in one drum. It records great too.
Also, since I play a bunch of instruments, I'm always carrying a bunch of instruments. The fact that this size drum comes with the bag with backpack straps frees up both of my hands for more stuff.
At well under $200, you can't go wrong.

Remo 25" x 14" Tunable Djembe, Kinte Kloth Design Review

Remo 25 x 14 Tunable Djembe, Kinte Kloth Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this exact Remo 14" Djembe drum used from my local drum shop. The finish on mine is also the same as photo " Kinte Kloth " and that was the feature that got me to buy it, the first time I saw it. The pattern gives it a really cool West African look, as I understand it each tribe uses a different pattern and combination of colors, like how the clans in Scotland each use a different Tartan. The sound is awesome, no weird buzzing or rattles, it is " tight as a drum " ! I am still very much a beginner even after a year, proper technique really takes some work and it is very easy to think that the Djembe is a simple instrument but to master it is no joke.
Another cool thing about it is that the weather won't affect it like one made from wood and goat skin. Tuning is easy, after a while many things can cause the drum head to get loose, just add small turns on the adjusters, going from one side to the other, a little bit at a time till it sounds and feels snappy and alive. The head is made from a product that really looks and feels like real goat skin, without all the ropes to loosen and tighten all the time. In defense of the wooden/goat skin Djembes, if you have the money and can deal with the inconsistencies and tuning, if it was made by a good craftsmen, then a bigger, better sound cannot be found any where else, wood is the best sound. But for anything other than studio recording or playing professionally, the Remo Djembe is more drum than anyone should need for jamming, drum circles, home use, etc., Check one out and you will be happy ! Good Luck and Practice, Practice, Practice !!! WaterRabbit aka Joseph W., Cape Cod, MA, USA

DBX Driverack RTA Condenser Microphone Review

DBX Driverack RTA Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm doing research on car audio noise due to subwoofer excitation. I am not 100% sure if this microphone is giving me adequate response for my study, but so far I am pretty impressed considering this is only $100. I'm able to easily quantify noise below 1kHz to at least 110 dB without any doubts. My only complaint so far is that I wish the technical information provided was more detailed but that's because I am doing research, which is more demanding than most applications.

I love this little noise maker. And most of the people who have heard me playing with it have asked where i got it. It is a cool noisemaker and it makes me wonder what kind of noise I could make with a bigger one. Have to be careful with the spring. It can get damaged if you are not careful as i was. I let it drop accidentally and it bent the spring, but it still works, only the spring is no longer straight as it was when it arrived. Still, cool product.

I am highly satisfied with the sound and playability of this drum. It is not a large drum, but does create a large sound. I have another drum (much larger) made by the same company, and a person can definately tell that these are high quality instruments. It looks cool too! When I first got it, I thought that even if it doesn't play well, it still looks cool! But I was very pleased to find that this instrument feels and sounds wonderfull!

Got this one as a late Christmas present since we got the Wii with the drum set and it was too difficult for out son to operate and he just wanted something to makes noises with :). This drum set looks great! We got it for our 5 years old boy an it is the perfect size for him, great for the price as well. It arrived sooner than we expected and we are sure our son is going to love it! The only thing is that it did not come with any instructions to put it together but went online and was able to find some generic instructions and my husband put it together pretty fast. Very happy with it!

Samson 8kit Drum Microphone Package Review

Samson 8kit Drum Microphone Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We use the microphones for simple recordings, small project setting. After tweaking a few inputs in PreSonus Project Firebox, you can't tell the difference in sound quality.
I recommend it for beginners, a good way to learn how to position microphones to support your simple recordings.
Quality, intention of microphone use and set up was easy.
The drum clips are made of plastic, is the only drawback, thus it will break after several
set ups, but we keep it pretty simple, not moving the clips.

Shure Beta 98H/C Clip-On Cardioid Instrument Microphone Review

Shure Beta 98H/C Clip-On Cardioid Instrument Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using this microphone for a number of professional performances over the last seven or eight years. The Shure Beta has one of the best quality sounds and pick up of any microphone I've ever used. Clamping it to the bell of my saxophone allows movement without being tied to stationary microphone stand. The only issue has been the thin cable that connects it from the clip to the XLR connector. It doesn't take much to damage it (this is the second one I own) and over the years, it obviously wears faster than an ordinary microphone/cable. The result is that the longer you own it, the more careful you have to be or else you'll have a crackle and pop everytime you move the wrong way. It's a shame they can't improve on the design of the otherwise amazing microphone. I've tried to compensate by leaving the cable wrapped in the reel (taped up) with only enough length required to get the clip from my waist to the bell of the saxophone which has helped extend the life this long. I'm getting ready to replace it again and I'm thinking about shifting to a wireless.

The Beta 98H/C premium cardioid condenser instrument microphone that clamps onto the bell of wind instruments or onto the rim of percussion instruments, and its transformerless preamplifier circuitry improves linearity across the full frequency range. The pickup pattern of the BETA 98H/C provides high gain-before-feedback and excellent rejection of unwanted noise. Its high maximum sound pressure level (SPL) enables it to handle the extreme demands of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.
The integrated gooseneck and ratcheting swivel joint allows the mic to be easily positioned and secured, and an isolation shock-mount reduces the transmission of instrument "key noise" and other mechanical noise. A gooseneck angle brace is included to provide better retention of the microphone placement during more active performances.

Key Features
Transformerless preamplifier circuitry that improves linearity across the full frequency range.
Pickup pattern provides high gain-before-feedback and excellent rejection of unwanted noise.
High maximum sound pressure level (SPL) enables it to handle the extreme demands of brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.
10-foot high-flex cable with attached preamplifier (XLR connection)
Tailored frequency response for open, natural sound reproduction
Compact, lightweight construction provides a low degree of visibility
Gooseneck, ratcheting swivel joint and gooseneck angle brace allow for optimum placement and fixed positioning

Applications and Placement The most common BETA 98H/C applications and placement techniques are described below. Keep in mind that microphone technique is largely a matter of personal taste; there is no one "correct" microphone position.
Saxophone Placement: Clamp the microphone onto the bell of the saxophone, so the microphone is a few inches from and facing into the bell. This will produce a bright tonal balance while minimizing feedback and leakage.
Soprano Saxophone Placement: Clamp the microphone onto the bell of the saxophone and adjust the gooseneck so the microphone is facing the keys of the instrument, a few inches from the lower keys. This will produce a warm and full tonal balance. For a brighter tone, adjust the gooseneck so the microphone is facing into the bell, a few inches away.
Trombone Placement: Clamp the microphone onto the bell of the trombone and adjust the gooseneck so the microphone is facing directly into the bell, a few inches away. This will produce a bright tonal balance while providing maximum isolation.
Trumpet Placement: Clamp the microphone onto the bell of the trumpet and adjust the gooseneck so the microphone is facing directly into the bell, a few inches away. This will produce a bright tonal balance while providing maximum isolation.
Drum Placement: Clamp the microphone onto the drum rim and adjust the gooseneck so the microphone is aiming a few inches above the drum head and an inch from the rim. This provides a full tonal balance.

I have ordered several aluminum and the copper doumbeks. I would rate them based on their sound quality as follows:
1) Wood covered aluminum
2) Vinyl covered aluminum
3) Copper
4) Bare aluminum
The bare aluminum versions are relatively the worst of them all.

Innovative Percussion Hard Xylophone or Bell Mallet, Birch Review

Innovative Percussion Hard Xylophone or Bell Mallet, Birch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an outstanding xylophone mallet, and transfers well over to glockenspiel and orchestral crotales. This is the choice mallet for playing with larger groups, especially orchestras and wind ensembles. The staccato sound of the xylophone is enunciated when struck with these mallets, and simultaneously produces a resonant tone. On certain xylophones, especially ones made of rosewood, these might damage the instrument. I would also highly recommend NOT playing these on a xylorimba, marimba, vibraphone, or set of tubular bells. However, specifically for the xylophone, they are a perfectly designed mallet. On xylophones made of kelon, the mallets produce an especially sonorous sound while maintaining the staccato nature of the instrument.

Dholak, Deluxe, Cord and Ring Review

Dholak, Deluxe, Cord and Ring
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The dholak was not strung the way it was in the photo also I think the makers must have ran out of cord because they just tied another piece on and because of this I can't completely tighten it.
Again in the photo they show the extra cord tied into a handle but my cord was just hanging.
The varnish is extremely cheap (It comes off if you run your finger nails over it lightly.)
TIP:
If you decide to buy from this dealer
when your tightening this drum make sure to pull the ring completely off of the drum until you pull it
to the right spot.(or else you'll have a line of missing varnish)That being said it sounded great after I added more rings and thats what matters most to me.
(that being said I have no prior experience with any dholak drum)
You get what you pay for and it was a cheap price so I'm not terribly upset but
I WONT be buying from this dealer in the future.
