AKG PERCEPTION 220 Professional Studio Microphone for general purpose with one inch true condenser large diaphragm capsule. Review

AKG PERCEPTION 220 Professional Studio Microphone for general purpose with one inch true condenser large diaphragm capsule.
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this mic now for about 3 months and have done a number of recordings of drums, vocals and acoustic guitar and mandolin with it. Due to its design, it is obviously not good for live performances with lots of electric and amplified instruments, but in a studio session where you isolate individual instruments, it is the best microphone I have ever used. It reproduces the sound "going in" very accurately, over an impressively large range of frequencies, without any colorations at all.
Specifically I used it for an overhead mic for a drumset, and both the cymbals and toms were nicely picked up. For vocals, it is best to sing into it at a distance of 0.5 - 2 feet, depending on how powerful the respective voice is. The same holds true for acoustic instruments like guitars and mandolin. It is a spectacular experience to play an acoustic guitar into this microphone and listen to the PA output or monitor. A friend of mine likened it to "being able to stick your head into the body of the guitar".
Very highly recommended.

DBX Driverack RTA Condenser Microphone Review

I'm doing research on car audio noise due to subwoofer excitation. I am not 100% sure if this microphone is giving me adequate response for my study, but so far I am pretty impressed considering this is only $100. I'm able to easily quantify noise below 1kHz to at least 110 dB without any doubts. My only complaint so far is that I wish the technical information provided was more detailed but that's because I am doing research, which is more demanding than most applications.

Building a home studio, owned a few mics before this, some were more expensive some cheaper. This microphone blows them all away, there's a reason Shure has such a good reputation in this industry. This mic is built rock solid, the switch feels really solid and I don't have to worry about it breaking. First time I used this I was absolutely amazed at how crisp and clear the recording was. I'm buying two more.

Shure SM57 Microphone Review

Shure SM57 Microphone
Average Reviews:

If you have used Shure SM57's before, you can probably skip this review.
If you are new to the wide-world of audio recording, this mic should be the first mic in your mic box. Get one of thee NOW if you haven't already. (I just paid $65 for mine here, used). It is a great mic for recording pretty much anything and will produce an acceptable sound. It is also great for live use as well. I have been into audio engineering as a professional for over 20 years (as well being a musician) and played hundreds of shows, been in dozens of studios, and have home-recorded for a long time. You know what microphone I run into more than any other? The Shure SM57. It has been used in the studio and on stages for decades- to mic up guitar cabs, drums, and pianos among other things. I have seen a lot of metal/thrash/punk bands use them for vocal mics. Yet they are subtle enough where I have seen people record acoustics guitars with great success. There is a reason for that- while yes, there are better sounding mics out there, when you buy a Shure SM57 ($100 new), you know EXACTLY what it is going to sound like and that the sound is unbeatable for the money. They are virtually indestructible as well, and when they do crap out (IF they do- I have a few that have been dropped numerous times, one took a beer bath, general abuse, and they still worked great) you can usually just get a new capsule for them for around $30-40, solder it in and BAM! it's as good as new.
Yes, there are other mics out there for the same money that sound as good (the Audix i5 comes to mind), and while they have their place and some have the same sound quality as a SM57, I highly urge anyone thinking of getting into audio engineering as more than a hobby start out with a 57. Why? Because it is the mic that ALL other

Designed specifically for kick drums and other bass instruments, the Shure Beta 52A high-output dynamic microphone provides superb attack and "punch", and delivers studio quality sound even at extremely high sound pressure levels. A successor to the popular Beta 52, the 52A features a redesigned knob and tightening mechanism for more durability and a wider mounting base that can accommodate a larger range of mic stands.

I saw these guys at the NAMM show two years ago and thought it looked like a good idea. Simple - take a super strong spring clamp and attach a goose-neck, right? Darn straight! Well, it has a lot of utility if you think out of the box as well. I have used it to mic everything from bass drums and bongos to guitars. I regularly use it to mount the tip jar. I have used it to secure and organize cord spaghetti on stage. Nice multi-use tool to have in your gig bag.

Audix Fusion 15 Mic Review

Audix Fusion 15 Mic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Fusion 15's (I bought 2) are proving to be a great value for the money. If you shop around like I did, you can get them for $70 each. Having a $70 mic for overheads on drum recording may sound like a real ham 'n egg operation, but these mics are really doing the job. You need to work on placement, just like with much more expensive mics, but once you've got right spot, the F-15's pick up everything - clearly. The gain on the board need not be cranked in order to pick up the crash cymbals correctly. With almost no efects added, the F-15 pick up the attack and decay of all cymbals, with again, amazing clarity. They also pick up, and add nicely to, the sound of the "drums" in your mix. You can go buy more expensive mics, but how much better they will sound, given the home recording setup, will not justify their purchase. Save your money - buy these. You can use the savings to buy more gear, or maybe some cold beer to sip while you listen to your great sounding tracks.

MXL V67G Large Capsule Condenser Microphone Review

MXL V67G Large Capsule Condenser Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This mic is fantastic! I've been singing, writing, and recording for almost 30 years and this mic is pretty much just as good as all of the silly expensive German mics I've used in larger studios over the years. There's a very slight presence peak, but nothing like most of the other Chinese mics. It isn't shrilling or peaky at all. Male tenor vocals and acoustic guitar sound great without any need for EQ whatsoever beyond a hi pass filter for the sub 100hz stuff. This mic is also an excellent candidate for a Michael Joly mod, he calls it one of the 7 audio wonders of the world because it makes no sense that this mic is this good at under $200. Michael mods these mics and you'd be hard pressed to be able to tell the difference between this one and the famous U87 with the German name that starts with an "N". I'm using it totally stock and it's been great. Buy it.

Shure DMK57-52 Drum Microphone Kit Review

Shure DMK57-52 Drum Microphone Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're doing live sound or a budget, or just starting to get into decent recording gear, this is definitely not a bad place to start. You can put an SM57 in front of just about anything and get a usable sound. A lot of people love them on snare's and guitar cabs, and get fantastic sounds from them. I'm sure you could get BETTER sound from other mics, but it's a very versatile mic, and is a great bang for your buck. It would never hurt to have 3 in your mic locker... especially if you're doing live sound. I haven't used mine live so I can't comment on the included rim mounts as I use stands in the studio, but they seem like they'd get the job done.
Given the choice, I'd probably prefer to own an AKG D112 over the Beta 52... but I couldn't pass up the price of this pack. I have both, and use them for different things, depending on the sound I want. I'm definitely not complaining about the Beta 52. I'm super happy with it, and it definitely has its place in the studio and venue. The Beta 52 is less expensive... especially if you buy it in this pack. So why limit yourself to one kick mic? Start with this pack, and if you feel like you need another mic down the road when you have extra cash, get a different one. The more the better. If your goal is to mic a drum kit on a budget, get these and a budget pair of small diaphragm condensers for overheads (MXL 603s perhaps), and you're set. If you know exactly what you want and don't mind spending a bit more, buy different mics. If you're on a budget (studio OR live), are just getting into the realm of decent gear and need a starting point, or happen to be searching for a few SM57's and a Beta 52, this is the package for you!

Three SM57s The industry standard for snare drum, and a reliable and high-performing choice for toms, the Shure cardioid dynamic SM57 microphone features a contoured frequency response that cuts through the mix with exceptional impact, while reproducing sound accurately.

AKG D112 Industry Standard Large-diaphragm dynamic microphone for Bass Instruments and Kick Drum Review

AKG D112 Industry Standard Large-diaphragm dynamic microphone for Bass Instruments and Kick Drum
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The D112 is an industry standard for kick drum micing, and for a reason. Its EQ contour is perfectly tailored for kick drum in a way that is only rivaled by the D6. For use in front of the beater, aimed at the rim, or outside the drum, the results are consistently satisfying. This definitely delivers that signature rock kick sound. If you are looking for more natural kick sound, the RE20 is probably your best bet, and if you like a very clicky sound, the B52 shines in that area. But the D112 should be adequate in any circumstance, if not necessarily the first choice for every genre. If you are only going to own one kick drum mic, this should be it.

After I bought the Audix Fusion 6 mics I realized I had a problem... I managed to over look the fact that they didn't come with mounting hardware. After searching many sites and browsing different products I found these. The DM50's are rugged and are heavy duty enough that I don't have to worry about a missed stroke disaster. They install easily and work perfectly for amplification. Plus they are designed for perfect mic placement. I'd recommend the DM50 for a drummer at any stage of the game, whether touring, or recording. This is a very good product.

MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package Review

MXL 990/991 Recording Microphone Package
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I produce music for a living and normally write only at my studio. Recently I became interested in having a basic laptop rig for home and I picked up this mic package based on some reviews. When I got them home I had found that they were an excellent value. They're really quite good sounding with lots of detail in the high end. Again, this is considering price- if they were $1,000 for the pair it would be an incredible ripoff. Of course I should state the obvious: These will not sound like a high-end Neumann, Lawson, or Telefunken mic costing many, many, times the price of these mics. That said, they're only $99! I bought two packs and have found they work very nicely in stereo pairs. There seems to be a large influx of inexpensive condensor mics coming in from overseas (particularly Asia) which IMHO are miles better than similarly-priced competition from Europe. However, if you want a Neumann U87, you have to buy one. While the high end on these are nice for the price it does have a bit of a synthetic sound to it at times, and lacks the smoothness of some of the much higher end mics. That said, the pair of these cover much sonic ground; you can use them for most instruments. Drums would be inadvisable unless you were using two matched larger ones as overheads.
This is the type of package I would strongly recommend to the hobbyist because of the price to performance ratio. I -wish- that something like this had existed when I was in high school, just getting into recording. It would make a great gift for the budding enthusiast.

nice, come with clips and the case, Upon hooking them up it is easy to hear they have been fine tuned for the each drum. Shure BETA 57A Instruement Microphone Review

Shure BETA 57A Instruement Microphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Beta series is the step above the incredibly popular SM series by Shure. The 57s are typically used to mic instruments and the 58s mainly for vocals. It is a dynamic microphone, so it's rugged enough for any situation, but is built to a much higher standard than typical dynamics so you get a lot more range and detail than you might expect.
I have used the 57 for a wide variety of instruments and vocals with great success both live and in the studio.
The Beta57 is excellent on snare, acoustic guitar, electic guitar, horns and wind instruments in addition to being a great vocal microphone. The supercardioid pattern ensures much more flexibility on stage with less chance of feeding back.
Overly loud bands with demanding vocalists who need as much as you can give them in the monitors, this is a life saver. Snare top and bottom. High hats when I don't want the bleed that a condenser would give. This is my go to mic for live applications.
