Gibraltar Standard Drum Key Review

Gibraltar Standard Drum Key
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was the best deal on Amazon for drum keys and it does not disappoint. The build was reliable and I have no worries that it will hold up after years of use, assuming I won't lose this like I lost the last one. i would recommend attaching this to a lanyard as it is small and may be easily misplaced. The good news it it comes with a hole in the key just for that purpose.

Remo Pinstripe PrePak Drumheads with Coated Snare Head Review

Remo Pinstripe PrePak Drumheads with Coated Snare Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sweet. Remo is second to none when it comes to drumheads - that's the first thing you need to know. From the Kevlar WhiteMax to the oil-filled pinstripes you can always find something in your size, tone, and price range. This is one of my favorite sets when paired with tone rings, and then I tune them until I can get a nice soft yet punchy attack, with a beautiful warm decay (I'll tune down my bottom head to heighten the effect). Very versatile when covering multiple genres. Now, on to the coated snare head.
I personally love the simplicity of a coated Powerstroke-3. I love how they are built to minimize overtones, and I find them very responsive at all stick heights. Most likely what your school snares have on them, though the coating has long since been beaten off from years of use. I wonder if anyone has thought to use Amazon reviews as a blog - aside from me thinking about it right now...

Evans Torque Drum Key Review

Evans Torque Drum Key
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I generally use the Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE) to tune my heads, but this one is as good and has a feature I like more than the Rhythm Tech model - this tuning key clicks and disengages when the dialed-in torque is attained whereas the Rhythm Tech model requires you to reset a lever.
It is simple to use. All you do is hand tighten your lugs, set the dial on the key to an initial setting, then go around your drum in the standard opposing tightening pattern. Test, and increase the dial setting until you get the sound you want. Once you do achieve the sound I strongly recommend that you write the settings down so you can quickly dial in your preferred tuning the next time you tune your drums or change heads.
A few things to consider: tuning involves more than just the batter side heads, which is especially true in the case of snare drums. Unless you are seeking a flat sound, do not tune the resonant heads to the same torque as the batter side heads, else the heads will cancel each other out because they will be vibrating at the same frequency. Also, make sure your lugs are lightly oiled so that each has uniform resistance or the torque settings will be inaccurate. Finally, if you cannot get the sound you are looking for between setting increments (i.e., between dial setting #3 and #4), use a standard key and try one eigth turn increments.
Regardless of whether you play as a hobby or professionally, this key is an amazing tool that will allow you to quickly and easily change the dynamics of your drums.

To be honest I did not hear any difference with putting this head on. It doesn't prevent me from having to place something inside the bass drum, miked or not.
The good point is that the hole is pre cut and the black gloss prevent the audience to see the blanket / pillow / mike mess inside. So I do not hear, but I see a difference.

After struggling to keep track of countless cheap (or free) drum keys, I decided to spring for this guy and it's simply fantastic, inasmuch as a drum key can be. It's solid and has a nice weight. The quick-release drops it off the keychain with ease, and unlike the others, I never lose this one.

Gibraltar SC-4245 High Torque Drum Key Review

Gibraltar SC-4245 High Torque Drum Key
Average Reviews:

I bought this key to go with my sons lot of goodies thinking it would be good for the marching snares (high torque is their middle name). This key is really well constructed and is alot longer than your average key. It gets to those hard to reach places with ease, the band guys love it! So far it seems to be really strong too and torques up those marching snares with no problems. I like the key so much I'm thinking about getting one for myself for my kit.

Evans EMAD 5-Piece Drumhead Pack Review

Evans EMAD 5-Piece Drumhead Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Amazing! I was looking for a low cost but high quality head pack to replace the factory heads on my set. These totaly transformed the sound of it, and i would recomend them for players who play rock or related genres. The snare rings a little so i got some of that moongel stuff and the ring went away. The toms aren't wonderful, but they certainly dont sound like crap. (i probably dont have them tuned right, so thats why) The bass head is the best part, and it comes with dampening rings so you can adjust how low you want it to sound. I would reccomend that you tune the head just past the wrincle point to get the most punchy sound. I like it that way, but if you dont just tune them higher. I use these mostly for recording, but i have used them on-stage a few times. great buy, especially for the money.

Evans EMAD System Pack, 22 Inch Review

Evans EMAD System Pack, 22 Inch
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I definitely like the idea they were a matched set. I was using old, beaten heads on my bass and needed something that would work better and look good, too. After I put these on, I could not believe I was playing the same bass drum. Now I have a tone that sounds more "musical" than just "thudding." I'm sure you could tune it to produce a nice, deep thud, too, but I really like the range of sounds I can create with this head set. There is a rim on the batter side that holds one of 2 included foam rings against the head. One is thicker in width than the other, allowing you to choose how much ring you want. The front port hole is just big enough to place a rolled up towel inside, but you'd need a small pillow if that's what you want. The thing is, I don't even use anything inside now. That's how controlled you can make it. If you want more of a thud, then add additional dampening, but, like I said, I prefer a more "musical" sound. Along with my Pearl B100DB Duo-Beat Beater, my upgraded bass drum now has the ability to cover a wide variety of sytles. The black color on front looks very cool, as well.

Attack Standard Drumhead 5-Pack Review

Attack Standard Drumhead 5-Pack
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I heard good things, so since I was selling the drums, I gave these a try. I didn't expect they would sound like Evans Pinstripes, and they don't, but, they really have a pretty good sound. They tune easily, seat well, and for the price, they sound great! Pretty shocking really. I've spent allot more money on heads that sounded much worse. Good bounce, good sound, and strong. I'm not sure I'd buy these for the studio, but you could do ALLOT worse, and for a allot more money. I bought another set as back up heads to my touring set. Nice deal, well done!

Remo Pinstripe Value Pack with Emperor X Coated Snare Head Review

Remo Pinstripe Value Pack with Emperor X Coated Snare Head
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These heads are virtually indestructable and produce a great sound. Attack is superb, especially when played hard and loud, and the construction ensures minimal ring and overtone.
Be aware that this head pack does not product the best tone and sound for jazz (get Remo Fiberskyns for that kind of sound), but the Pinstripe model that comprises this pack has become the De Facto standard for rock.
If you still have the heads that come with your drum kit - and play rock - changing over to this pack will probably make a dramatic improvement in the way your kit sounds, regardless of whether you are playing a budget no-name brand, or Pearl, Mapex, Tama, Ludwig or similar pro quality drums.
I also recommend that you get a Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE) or Evans Torque tuning key (ASIN B0002D0HZI) to allow you to quickly get your heads in perfect tuning once you have them installed. Either of these will allow you to get the most out of these (or any other) heads and transform your kit into a finely tuned, professional sounding set of instruments.

DRUM DIAL Precision Drum Tuner Drum Tuner Review

DRUM DIAL Precision Drum Tuner Drum Tuner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For initial and maintenance tuning I use both the Evans Torque Drum Key (ASIN B0002D0HZI) and the Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE). Both of those devices use a torque setting to attain even tensioning around drum heads. However, for final tuning I use this dial, which uses actual head tension instead of lug torque. The head tension method is not only a more accurate indication of how well your drums are tuned, but is also more accurate when attaining a setting. Here's why - the torque type tuners can be thrown off by uneven lug resistance, even when you pre-lube the lugs. When you are measuring actual head tension you are not dependent upon the mechanical parts, such as lug screws, lug float, etc. You are measuring directly off the head.
Using this dial does consume time. First, you need to have each drum on a flat surface (you cannot tune them in place on your kit). This means that you need to do an initial tuning, lift the drum to test the sound, and repeat until you attain the sound you are seeking. Once you do, however, you can be assured that the tuning will be uniform across the drum head.
There is an edge gage built into this device that allows you to test head tension at any point on the drum's head diameter with the assurance that you are measuring precisely from the edge of the diameter. This, like the head tension itself, is important to getting the tune setting you want and makes it repeatable.
Among the more time consuming aspects of using this versus the torque type tuning tools is the fact that each drum is vastly different and will take a lot of trial and error to get them where you want them with respect to sound. For example, when tuning my toms using the torque tools I mentioned above I could use the same setting on the batter sides of each tom, and an offset setting on the resonant sides and then tweak them to get half an octave difference when going from my 8x10, 8x12, 9x12 and 14x14. It is not as easy when using the dial for the first time because the acoustic properties of each drum requires more attention to myraid details, such as a tension ratio between the batter and resonant heads on the toms, and the actual tension settings for each drum. If you work through each drum, though, you will be rewarded with a kit that is perfectly tuned. Even the cheapest drum kit will sound like a high-end kit after taking the time to tune them with this dial.
Since there is a learning curve, expect to spend at least 30 minutes per drum the first time you use this, then an additional hour after you get each drum tuned tweaking the entire kit to obtain the octave separation you want. If you write down the settings for each drum the next time you do a tuning it will take a fraction of the time.
Do be aware that if you change head types you will need to go through the entire process again because heads can completely change the dynamics of your kit. For example, settings for toms using Evans Hydraulic heads will probably not work well if you switch to Remo Pinstripes or Remo Fiberskyn heads because of the vastly different sound qualities of these heads when compared to one another.

Gibraltar SC-4248 Speed Key Review

Gibraltar SC-4248 Speed Key
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am always changing heads on my drum kits and purchased this speed key to make the task easier. However, it isn't as easy as the design would lead one to believe.
The problem is the crank part of this key does not extend far enough horizontally, and the shank is too short to hold upright. This results in the key going to a natural angle when you are spinning it, which slows you down at best, and could damage your lugs at worse.
I recommend, instead, using the Evans Drum Key Pack (ASIN B0002M3BKC), which includes a magnetized drum key in regular "T" configuration, and a drill bit drum key that will make short work of spinning the lugs. Also be aware that if you do opt for the Evans solution I recommend, make sure you have a low-torque drill.
When it comes to drum lugs less is better because you only want to spin them hand tight and finish with a traditional key or a tuning key. The drill I recommend is the Campbell Hausfeld DG110400CD Mini Compact Drill with Keyless Chuck (ASIN DG110400CD). This is a compact and inexpensive drill that does not have much power or torque. Finally, I recommend final tuning with either a Rhythm Tech Memo Key (ASIN B0002E2EOE), or an Evans Torque tuning key (ASIN B0002D0HZI). Either of those will allow you to quickly get your heads in perfect tuning once you have done an initial tuning and have written down the settings.
