(More customer reviews)My last set of brushes have been in my stick bag for about 15 years. They have finally been worn down enough (Read: wires broken off) that I felt the need to replace them. I wasn't too happy about that because I loved my old set and could not find them for sale anywhere now.
I found this set of brushes in my last copy of Modern Drummer magazine in the 'new and notable' section. These brushes appear to have taken the best features from all its previous siblings. They are balanced well. They are a great length. They are retractable to protect the wires during storage. The metal rings on the butt end are great for cymbal work. Best of all, they feel great in my hands. These brushes will be in my stick bag for decades to come.

Vater Percussion Monster Brush Review

(More customer reviews)I love these things. I use them on my set of congas, conguitos, bongos and cymbals with great results. They are adjustable but they sound best "full closed". Your hand drums will acquire a new dimension. They are a little hard to play because you can't count on much of a "bounce back"... you'll have to move them yourself! Practice and you'll get it. They'll teach you some discipline, actually. Higly recommended.

Great sound for the music I do (soft jazzy rock)... but very poor contruction. I had a pair for a few months and they are almost gone. The soft rubber where the handle meets the bristles has cracked on both brushes and I've already lost a few bristles. If you consider that I've used these brushes sparingly and on congas, bongos and cymbals (on "soft" stuff that is, with no nasty rims to contend with), it is obvious that this product needs to be better manufactured. Let me guess... built in China?

Vic Firth Heritage Brush Rubber Handle Review

(More customer reviews)I've tried this and the companion model, Vic Firth Jazz Brush ASIN B0002F53G4, and prefer this one.
The reasons I like this Heritage model is the lighter gage wires and the way the brush feels in my hand. It's lightweight, has a nice balance and produces the exact sound that I am trying for. The Jazz model I mentioned would be my second choice because it has the same balance, but the heavier gage wires do not appeal to me, especially when I do accents.
Choosing the right brush is a matter of personal preference. Regardless of which brush you ultimately choose or your level of skill with them (brush work is becoming a lost art), I highly recommend getting a copy of Essence of Brushes (ASIN B0002VEPN0). This DVD is an instructional movie by Ed Thigpen (cited by both Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa as the best brush man in the world).

RegalTip 550W Drum Brushes Wood Handle Review

(More customer reviews)Like all Regal products, very well made. I use this particular brush for Latin feels, as the wood handle sounds great as a cross stick clave' sound. For most other work, I prefer a heavier rubber coated model. Non- retractable means the bristles can become bent over time,but I keep mine in a plastic tube when not in use, but the positive side is they do not, and cannot, rattle. Only complaint is that the handles could be a little thicker,otherwise highly recommended.

Vater Percussion Wire Tap Sweep Review

(More customer reviews)I've owned a pair of Vater retractable wire brush sticks for years--- they were excellent, sturdy and great sounding. After extended toll, I decided to replace them with another pair-- I mistakingly ordered these sticks (the cheaper, non-retractable model). The result: the base of the brushes became "wobbly" in a matter of days. The sticks still function, but they don't feel right. The solution: upgrade to the $20++ retractable sticks.

RegalTip 595N Regal Drum Brushes Whiskers Review

(More customer reviews)I never met a set of brushes that I didn't like and every set has a slightly different feel and sound. These nylon bristle brushes have a nice soft sound and feel and are excellent for backing a vocalist or soloist of any instrument that is playing pianissimo. For those playing on a coated batter head, nylon is easier on the coating as compared to wire. Wire brushes tend to wear the coating off. Wire brushes with bent tips work well too, and are easier on the coating, but I like the feel of the Whiskers better. The sound is lovely, and the nylon bristles have great resilience, which translates for me into a faster response for up tempo numbers. I have one pair that are over 20 years old that are slightly shorter and softer than the latest version, but both are excellent and highly recommended. The thing with brushes is to play with as many different ones as possible because they are all different and they are all fun. Think legato!

Regal Tip? BR-575-YJ Yellow Jacket Retractable Wire Brush-Single Pair Review

(More customer reviews)This model is About .5 inches shorter than the Vic Firth Heritage Brush and about the same weight. The feel is different due to the minor difference in length and the wires, which are a much lighter gauge. The wires flex noticeably more than most brush models I have used, and certainly so when compared to the Vic Firth Heritage model. In fact, the feel of the wires is similar to the feel of nylon, while still producing the distinctive sound that only a wire brush can provide. The wire is such a thin gauge that you may encounter problems with them falling out under heavy playing (I have heard a few such stories on various forums), so you may want to consider a pair for ballad playing on heads such as the Remo coated Ambassador because, unlike other brushes, these do not catch on new heads and require less break-in time.
