(More customer reviews)I happen to order a Meinl ID8-RB IBO drum the same time i ordered this drum and they both arrived on the same day within an hour of each other the Meinl arrived first, so i unpacked it and played it for about an hour and it had alot of various tones between the ceramic, and the fiberglass bottom, as well as a very deep base sound, but it was a huge drum and very awkward and uncomfortable to play on my lap.
Then the LPM 1400 museum series arrived an hour later, now keep in mind the LP is a mere $50.00 to the Meinl's $120.00 and yet the LP was packaged much better and also included a booklet telling you about the drum and showing the other models available, not to mention a very cool tightly wrapped round tweed rope stand and this drum was incredibly comfortable in my lap and had very bright and deep bass sounds, and i must admit so much more smooth playing than the Meinl.
It's just a great drum and has immediately become my favorite out of the 3 i have, the other 2 being the Meinl Liquid IBO drum $160.00 and of course the ID8-RB Ceramic/Fiberglass bottom newer addition, LP really makes a quality product and it will probably get the most play out of the 3 because of it's great sound and comfort and ease of playing....buy this drum.

Meinl Bongo Cajon Review

(More customer reviews)When I decided to give my daughter (not 4 yet) some experience with percussion, beats, and timing, I set a few parameters about the musical implements that I would purchase:
1. They had to sound good. And I mean good enough to grow with her.
2. They had to be safe.
3. They had to be durable.
4. They had to require practically no tuning or maintenance.
Thanks to Amazon, I stumbled across Meinl Nino percussion instruments. I purchased 4 items which I am listing in order of my favorite (1) to my least favorite (4). Hey, they are all fantastic and tonally interesting but some are just more fun than others:
1. The Meinl Bongo Cajon.
2. The Meinl Oriental Wood Tone Block
3. The Meinl Wood Shaker (large cylinder).
4. The Meinl Wood Guiro.
All of these are from the Meinl Nino line for kids and adhere to strict European safety standards. And man, do they sound good. They're fun. They look and feel great with their natural rubber wood professionally-finished construction. And best of all, they require NO tuning or maintenance and seem virtually indestructible.
The Bongo Cajon is just hard to resist. I, personally can't keep my hands off of it. The Oriental Wood Tone Block was the biggest surprise of the group because I wasn't expecting much; but the number of complementary sounds that you can make with the bell shaped body and the graduated striker is both interesting and enjoyable. The wood shaker sounds great and is fun to use with a variety of musical styles. The Guiro sounds warm and interesting and you can make a surprising number of tones again with the graduated scraper stick.
Meinl Nino wood percussion instruments highly recommended!

(More customer reviews)This is a great instrument for small crowds, mostly acoustic playing. The whole instrument itself is very sturdy, so you have no worries about it break. It comes with four strings, which can easily be tightend or losend with a tool that comes with the Cajon. The noise is very clear and sounds great.
The bass is louder than I expected which is a plus. Also the wood, is hard, but not hard enough where it is going to hurt your hands while your playing. I use this for worship time doing bible studies, and it works great and can keep an excellent beat. It has a grooved surface at the top of the cajon, so when you sit on it, your not going to slip off. So if your looking for a cajon just to use for fun, or small groups, this is one to choose.

Fat Congas String Cajon Drum Review

(More customer reviews)I have played various Cajons (Flamenco and Peruano) and feel that the Fat Congas Cajon Flamenco is my favorite to play. Unlike many Cajons where their is only one tapa (playing/striking side), this Cajon is made of real wood and can be hit on all sides for various tones. One side has snares usually used for Flamenco, another has a deep wood sound usually used for Afro-Peruvian style and the other two sides have a higher sound that can be used for Caribbean (Son, Bachata, etc...). The downside for the Cajon, is that it is not the same dimensions as many mass produced Cajons on the market, so there are not many gig bags available and it is a little heavier (still really light) than others, but these things should be overlooked, due to the overall quality of the Cajon. I made two personal modifications, where I took off the sitting pad, so that I can move around the Cajon for quicker movement to use the various tapas and I added two nails on the side opposite of the snare to get a sound I was looking for. Overall, I highly recommend this Cajon.

Meinl African Talking Drum Review

(More customer reviews)I got this as a gift for a friend. Several other websites have the drum w/ the curved drumstick included, for the same price as this one, apparently Amazon does not include that.
Though my friend has no complaints with the drum thus far, it's annoying that he didn't get the stick and so can't really play it- and the only sticks i've been able to find are not specific to this drum, and cost a quarter again as much.
Good product likely, buy it somewhere else though and get the stick included.

Meinl Fiberglass Liquid Ibo Drum Review

(More customer reviews)This Meinl Liquid IBO drum is the most expensive for a very good reason, you can literally and fast or subtly change the pitch and tone of the drum by holding it at certain angles as the water moves into different parts of the metal base.
Doing this might take a bit of practice, especially if your not familiar with IBO or UDU drums but once you are, the different sounds you get are very rewarding, and the big bulbis shape of Meinl's drums are just effortless and so comfortable to hold and play, there are days where i have it in my lap for hours playing it or just holding it, sometimes forgetting it's even there, almost like a kid with a teddy bear, it's that comfortable.
Anyone who purchases this drum will not be sorry, their has not been a day that has gone by since i bought it, that i have not taken it out for a short or long period of time, it's getting to the point where i don't feel comfortable unless i'm holding this drum and tapping out a different rhythm every time.

Meinl Trejon Review

(More customer reviews)If you are looking at a trejon, you may have already played a cajon. For those who have not, a cajon is like a nice size wood box (think of a crate you could use as a stool) you sit on and and play the front surface of with your hands. The playing surface is usually wood and the interior is hollow, providing a nice Thlapt Thla Thlapt Thla Thlapt Thplat ... sound as you strike it with your fingers or palm.
Videos on youtube or the Meinl site will provide you some practical tips on playing. Some of the videos on youtube are inspirational at the amount of sound you can get from one tone - cajons typically produce only a single tone, usually bass or snare.
The Trejon is a natural offspring of the cajon. The real difference is that it has three separate playing surfaces: bass (bottom 2/3), midrange (top left), and snare (top right). It is slightly lower and wider than a traditional cajon; however, is taller in person than it looks in the photos, where it appears fairly squat.
The sound quality is excellent and the sound of each playing surface is markedly different. It sounds more like a drum kit. The bass in particular is quite deep and full and changes in tone over the playing surface, the deepest sounds coming from the middle, while the midtone and snare portions are surprisingly uniform across there smaller playing surfaces. To my ear the bass section sounds closer to a traditional drum than most cajons which have a slightly hollow / woody sound. Also, would add that the angled playing surface is a plus.
A few minor differences over traditional cajon that are worth noting:
1. it does feel slightly wider to sit on.
2. because the bass is at the lowest point, you must lean further forward and closer to the floor to play (on a cajon you can sit almost upright, whereas with a trejon you will be slightly more hunched over to reach the bass)
3. if you travel, there is not yet a ready made case for the trejon, though the company is reportedly coming out with one in 2010.
4. also worth noting that cost is significantly more than a traditional cajon which can be had for $100 to $200 depending on quality and sound.
I debated on whether to buy several cajons or work on one instrument with several playing surfaces, and so far have been pleased with choosing the trejon. Its versatility makes it more fun to play and practice on.
Factors from most important to least important in considering a rating:
Sound quality: 5+ stars
Build quality: 5 stars
Comfort in playing: 3.5 stars
Cost versus what you get for your money: 4 stars
True review would give it 4.5 stars, but the surprisingly good sound will give it the benefit of rounding up rather than down. And overall, would say it is a worthy alternative to a mono-sound cajon.

Fat Congas Cuban Bajo Cajon Review

(More customer reviews)I really love this drum. I brought this to the rumba in the park, and it really has a nice bottom sound. I like to use both hands on the 2 different pitched sides and use bass and open tones on both sides. Sometimes, I will turn it so one side is facing front and use 2 hands on one side. You can sit on it and play the cajon plus congas. . . this is the best Bajo Cajon you can buy; only better cajon than this one is probably hand-made.

I bought it to learn on. So far it has held up well. It is the perfect price and quality for someone who isn't too serious or care too much about professional sounds. I'm sure there are better made ones out there, but this would be perfect for just a casual acoustic setting. It is also able to be tuned.
