The 12 inch drum seems to be a nice size to be able to hold onto easily. If you choose to not hold it by the cross ropes in the back, (or if unable to use your hands to grip) you could rest it standing on your lap with a hand on top to brace it, or simply lay it flat on your lap. It can be played with the included beater, or you can tap it with your hand. It's actually quite the versatile little instrument.
I love this drum and the way it sounds, which is very Native American. It could be used in a drum circle environment, although the sound is different than you would hear from typical African instruments like djembes. Remo Djembe, Earth 24X12 Inches
This drum is excellent for shamanic style drumming - repetitive patterns to balance the left/right hemispheres of the brain to allow you to enter a trance-like state for journeying. Shamanic Journeying: A Beginner's Guide
Even though this drum looks similar to other frame drums Remo Frame Drum FIBERSKYN 12" x 2.5", it's got a thicker rim and a lower sound that lends more to be played with a beater (included) than with your fingers, as is common in Middle Eastern Music. I have tried playing this drum with a tipper, Knob Tipper Sloped with Ridge as you would play on a Bodhran, 18" ROSEWOOD TUNABLE BODHRAN and well...it's probably going to sound better on a Bodhran.
The outer rim of the drum takes acrylic paint well if you would like to decorate your drum. I think I used acrylic fabric paint on mine.
