Korg Sound on Sound Unlimited Track Recorder Review

Korg Sound on Sound Unlimited Track Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a few hours recording with this at home and then took it to the car, picked up some friends and let them hear it through the car stereo... they couldn't believe I did everything on this little black box!
It's a remarkable device that comes somewhere between a pocket mp3 recorder and full DAW setup...
CONSTRUCTION: Absolutely rock solid - top quality product. Made in Japan. Doesn't look or feel cheap.
SIZE: Nice size for it's purpose - not too big - not too small - just right for the desktop, couch or car! 5.25" x 2.75" x 1"
CONTROLS: Large, positive controls, all well laid out, easy and intuitive to use.
SCREEN: Adequate size (1.75" diagonal), clear and bright. It's actually a TOUCH screen - initially you probably won't use this feature much but I'm sure it'll become very useful once you are more familiar with the device.
BOOT UP: Not exactly spontaneous - It takes about 20 secs to boot-up - then it'll take a few more seconds for you to setup a "New" recording. You can either click through all the previous recordings till you get to the end of the list (takes too long) or you can simply hold down the STOP key and press RECORD. Now you've got a new empty "song" file ready to be recorded.
RECORDING: For recording freestyle, the built in mics are very, very good... they pickup everything crystal clear.
TEMPO: Set the tempo by just tapping the tempo key and the device responds by displaying and setting the BPM's accordingly.
DRUMS: Next, you can select a drum beat - there are 50 - but there's only one or two that I like (there's no way to program or create your own) - so I always use mainly the same drum sound as a metronome while I record bass guitar... Each drum preset can be varied a little during playback by touching the (Rhythm) screen giving 4 variations, fills, hi-hats, etc...
SOUND ON SOUND: Having chosen a drum beat, a good tempo and a bassline, I can now start adding additional sounds (overdubs) - even vocals - and move on with the creative process.
UNDO: Let's say the song is 5 minutes long and you are recording each track live... for the whole 5 minutes... there's times when you make a mistake so you STOP - press the UNDO button and delete the last take in it's entirety - then try again... This starts to take up a considerable amount of time... hours can disappear while you are playing with just ONE song.
EFFECTS: The effects are phenominal - you can use them on the input of the recording... and on the Master output. Each effect has several parameters - so again, you could be spending many hours messing around with different ideas for each part (overdub) that you record.
BATTERIES: Two AA Batteries seem to last a very long time. I see no need to buy a power adapter.
POCKETABLE? It's a little too big to carry around in your pocket 24/7 for spontaneous recordings... I found another recorder just right for that - the Olympus Digital Voice Recorder DM-420
DILEMMA: You will probably spend as much time recording with this device as you would sitting down and recording with a proper DAW... but the DAW results will obviously be far superior... so why not just sit down at your DAW and record? Why do it once on this SR1 - and then probably have do it all again on a proper DAW? (with better Mic Pre's, EQ's etc).
CONCLUSION: The SR1 is a poor man's recording studio - or a rich man's toy studio. No doubt some kid who couldn't afford anything else will make a hit record with the SR1.
I REALLY LOVE THE KORG SR1 - I JUST HAD TO HAVE IT!!!!!!!

M-Audio Black Box Amps, Effects, and Recording Review

M-Audio Black Box Amps, Effects, and Recording
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the Black Box for a while. I find it pretty easy to use, and the range of effects is really impressive. There was no problem doing the update on Mac OS X. It works fine with GarageBand and Logic, as well as many other programs. It is true, I found that it does inspire creativity and inspiration, I never knew a box could get that many sounds out of my guitars. Very nice.
On the other hand, my AC adapter broke. Usually this is not a big deal, but M-Audio has you on this one - they are virtually the only place to get a replacement that you can be sure will work, and the replacement will set you back $24.99. I have the pedal, and it works, but the functionality is far less than I expected. There's very little ability to switch between a wide range of sounds. I would have paid more for a pedal with more functions. Maybe next time they can even offer a FireWire version that gets its power from the computer, so the AC Adapter is no longer an issue in those circumstances, and then I would not have to wait for a part that is on backorder.
So in summary, while they did a rocking great job on the guitar sounds and effects and amps, with works fine with my Mac, I would recommend that their next version use a regular power adapter so I don't have to go searching all over the internet if mine breaks, and put in a pedal with a lot more features. I searched for a pedal that might have what I want, but did not find anything.

Pros:Great product for those who requires amplify a dynamic mic.
We use for vocals in a karaoke system with excellent results. It doesn't requires expensive microphones. With cheaper mics produces good sound.
Cons: The preamp doesn't has a power on/off switch so you must to plug/unplug the DC adapter. It is a little expensive but works fine.

Native Instruments BATTERY 3 Drum Sampling Software Review

Native Instruments BATTERY 3 Drum Sampling Software
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Windows Vista 64 Bit OS users:
As previous reviews have stated. Program will not work as boxed.
You have to upgrade. But first, install the program.
Next: Go to the Native Instruments website. Go to the free downloads
section and download the latest update of 'service center'. Don't use the
Service Center installed with the program or it's update function. It doesn't
work. It just pretends for a while and then crashes/goes off-line. Download
'Service Center' fresh from the website.
Install the service center update and activate your software - worked for me.
Now you're registered and the Service Center should automatically show you
the update(s) available. Download the Battery update (the program will not
work until you do).
Install the update. Shows on desktop as a Battery Setup icon. Please note, it took a long
time after clicking the next button for the 'Battery configuration' to complete.
Now everything's fine. Product works. No issues except for some occasional background noise
which quite frankly is probably Windows related - sounds like a system process is running
in the background which messes with the audio - 'great' - :{ - Windows - My primary DAW's on Mac
but too old to upgrade and too expensive to replace - hence Windows.
Four Stars because as incredible as this program is I feel like I just loaded a monster version of
'keyboard drums' on my computer. Don't get me wrong ... It's still great. And some of the
Battery 3 kits sound quite incredible. But not quite what I expected. I was expecting a little
bit more of dynamic realism from the program.
Hence 4 stars.
Compatibility with Windows Seven? Contact Native Instruments before purchasing.
The above review only applies to 64 Bit Vista.

Digidesign Mbox 2 Micro Review

Digidesign Mbox 2 Micro
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first issue you have to address when considering this product is do you actually need or have a use for it? As I compose music the answer for me was yes, when I am outside of the studio or home I needed a way to create music. This device is very handy if you have a laptop and you don't need to record anything yourself. It is create for writing midi tracks and playing with loops or other various activities like adding effects to your pre recorded tracks. This is an instrument to make your current rig much more mobile and that's about it. I enjoy taking my laptop outside and just writing a midi track to the beautiful scenery. This device actually makes me want to take a train to work because I would just be more productive. Also it is a great way to upgrade your pro tools system if you haven't made the jump to 8.0. If you have I would suggest waiting until the next update unless you are in dire need of writing or mixing away from your stationary rig.
