(More customer reviews)This cymbal isn't that pretty; but it's sound is. Six-seven years ago, you had to audition them live because each cymbal was quite different and most of them had a pretty thin, awful tone. I found mine in the used section of a major Nashville drum shop and fell in love with it immediately. In the last few years Zildjian has improved this cymbal, now they just about all sound great. I originally was attracted to the K Custom Dark Ride, but my Special Dry has proven to be far more versatile, which is good given the cost of a decent ride cymbal these days!
For the drummer who needs a good crash ride for a small kit like a Rhythm Traveler, this would be ideal. It's nice and dark and dryish (though not like an Earth Ride or flattop) with a great full range of overtones. If you ride the edge, it's washy as you could want and it has a terrific bell for rockin' on. Crash it and you'd think it's the Second Coming; "Oriental Crash of Doom", my rear end! I'll take this one any day. If you ride it near the bell, you get something of a salsa sound.
This beastie really changes character with the kind of stick you use. Use a wood-tipped hickory and it's a bit lighter and airier than a Pro-Mark Oak. Go from a wood tip to a nylon and the change in definition is really noticable. That's why I love this thing, it's a dozen different rides in one, depending how you use it. You ever see a small acoustic band where the drummer has a snare, hats and maybe a tom, but you'd swear he was playing a fusion kit? Well that's this ride: if you take time to learn its secrets you'll find you have a wide range of possibilities you didn't know. Makes us better at our music, I think. Buy with confidence!
