Before I begin, let me say that I own several sets of hi-hats, with my main set up utilizing 14" Zildjian A Custom Mastersounds in the x-hat position and 12" Zildjian A Custom Mastersounds on the stand.
I also have a set of 10" recording hats in my collection, and this is where this story begins. I have a project where the recording hats best fit the need, but I don't like taking those out to gig ... I simply don't. And so began my search for a set of 10" hats. An internet search brought me to these Zildjian ZHT mini-hats, which are half the cost of my "good ones." But would I be happy with the sound of sheet bronze?
Well, I am pleased to say that these little dudes are just as clean, focused and articulate as my recording hats.
How did they do this? Don't know, don't care. Somehow Zildjian has come up with an alloy that they can use in sheet form, finish in traditional aesthetics, and produce that tight, well defined sound I thought only possible with their more expensive line of hi-hats. Best of all, they have found a way to get them to market for a fraction of the cost of cast bronze. Given the relatively low retail price point, these are a real value.
