I bought this one because I was getting tired of having to fix the ropes on my African djembe, and I was also looking for a lighter drum with a big head. On those marks, this is a nice improvement. It is easy to tune with the Allen wrench that comes with it, and the shell is remarkably light, which makes for much easier standing while playing. The original head is also beveled, which allows for a nice hit, and the skin is quite thin. That is a mixed blessing. The thinner skin makes for a really quick jump off of it due to the lack of vibrational absorption, so the speedy drummers might like this feature. I can play faster on this one. The one really down side is that it has a bit of a ringing overtone and does not have that firmer sound that you get with an animal skin. I have compensated for this by using Moon Gel, which you put on the head and it absorbs a bit of the ringing, but it still is there. As such, I would suggest (as with all instruments) it is worth a play to see if it is your cup of tea.
