I bought this wanting a portable conga. I own 2 big gon-bops congas, but they are not that much fun to lug around. I also play a pair of Pearl Primero congas at church. I set this up on a snare stand next to congas and was so delighted with the sound, I started using this more.
Now, you have to play with it some to get the sounds you want, sometimes using your fingers more than your palm for deeper sounds. I was sold on the idea that congas and bongos must have real skin heads, but the sound coming from this head has totally changed my mind. It has much more volume than I would have imagined also.
I don't know if this replaces real wood congas, but it has such a pretty distinct sound, that its worth buying as an add-on. And it really fits the bill as a good portable drum. You do need to buy a bag for it though. Remo sells a bag, and you can also use a snare drum gig bag for it-like a 6.5 by 14" would be roomy enough.
If you want to play standing up, you are going to need a tall snare stand-those are normally designated as a concert snare stand because concert percussionists play standing up and kit drummers play seated.
