I purchased a Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit (Rustic Pearl finish)in April 2010 and was instantly amazed. Having been a professional drummer for 31 years and having had numerous kits of several brands, this kit is my all time favorite. The tonal quality is bright and full and great for both studio and live gigs. The compact size is also great for transporting. Gretsch truly has the best sound for me.

Gretsch Catalina Maple MC-E825PT-MR 5 Pc Shell Pack Red Review

I was an active drummer 20 years ago, and got back into drumming this summer. I have owned a Ludwig 5 piece and a Tama, and would have never even considered Gretsch until this set came out. After researching the Catalina Maple kit, I tried it out at a local drum store. Man, was I blown away! From the quality of the shells, (6-ply,) to the hardware and 2.5 mm hoops this set is loud, clear and the tone is amazing. The 2 floor toms took some getting used to, as I was accustomed to playing a 5 piece, but I now can rock 'em. I added a DW 7000 double bass pedal and Iron Cobra hi-hat stand and let the maple tones cut through. The factory batter heads need to be replaced, but the resonant heads are good for now. I am using Evans clear heads with a G2 Dry on the snare. The bass drum needs a EMAD System Evans batter head, but the reso head is fine and has the Gretsch logo on it. I use NO PADDING in the bass, as the EMAD takes care of that and the shell is loud and punchy.
For the money, you can't touch another kit of this caliber. It gave me enough to buy about $200.00 worth of heads which let the character of the maple shine through. I waited 20 years for this kit, and I am now a big Gretsch fan. Mine is Tobacco Fade and looks amazing just sitting there. Can't wait to gig with it. I would suggest buying bags or cases if you will be transporting it, but even if you are just a hobbyist or want to use it for recording, the Catalina Maple will not disappoint. I only hope it goes off sale or is discontinued soon so I will be the only active drummer in the area with one!
