Toca TDHAT-13 for Djembe Review

Toca TDHAT-13 for Djembe

This 13" jembe hat fits, seems to be well made (but I haven't packed it to a session yet) and I like the appearance.
NOW for the specifics, that Toca usually does not supply...If I get rollin' I will give my very low opinion of Toca customer service.
My jembe is a Toca Mechanically tuned Players Series with a 12" head. I have asked both Toca & several purveyors of Toca equipment, if the hats are sized for traditional rope &/or mechanically tuned jembe's (I have all tunable jembe's) and got no reply from anyone. Typical of companies with huge market share (Latin Percussion/Toca at the top of the "please buy our stuff, but don't bother us" list)that really do not give a furry rats patootie about customer service, although they know all the right words.
I bought this hat 'cause the shipping was free and the price was as low as I had seen it over a long period of time. I may buy one for my 14" and 10" Toca jembe's if I can get a free shipping deal and the unit is an inch larger than my mechanical drum. (i.e. 15" & 11"). The hats "appear" to & may be able to fit the drum at the head size indicated (12" on any 12" drum), but I don't want to squeeze it over the tuning gear each time, and again Toca or the large equipment sellers are not bothering to answer my emails for that info. They get to keep their hats and I keep my money.
Hope this helps...have a nice day.

Meinl Djembe Strap Review

Meinl Djembe Strap

I have only owned this strap a few weeks, so I can not comment on its quality in the long term. BUT I must say this is very well made. The shoulder straps have very thick padding, which is very helpful if you have a heavy drum and/or play for long periods of time. The cloth covering the straps is very similar to that in the picture but much more red, and I like the red version better too. The djembe is held to the strap by a hook. The hook is attached to a thick leather plate. The whole thing feels very sturdy. I wear a XXXL Shirt and this is really tight on me, but I can bear it. I use this strap on my Rope Tuned Djembe and my Remo Djembe. All I did was take a small piece of rope and make a loop around a couple tuning ropes, and on the Remo I made a small loop around the tuning bolt. Then slide the loop over the hook, works great. Ez on Ez off, but never had drum fall off unintentionally. Also I had a couple of the hooks you see mountain climbers use to quickly attach one rope to another, I got them at the dollar store a while back. You can use those instead of small piece of rope. I mention this because I read somewhere that this strap wasnt for Rope tuned Djembes, which is totally untrue, all you do is make a small loop like I said. I am very pleased with the quality of this product, but I have only had it a few weeks.

Neotech Percussion Strap, Black Review

Neotech Percussion Strap, Black

I've been using one of these straps for several years for carrying a Surdo (a big honkin' heavy Brazilian drum). It's by far the most comfortable option I've found; better than the Remo Slider for me. The stretchy neoprene yoke helps to distribute the weight across your shoulders and absorbs some of the impact of striking the drum, and the 2 straps help hold the drum centered in front of you (more or less).
It's well made. I've used it at least once a week for 3 years and the hardware has held up well. (Just recently the neoprene started to tear near where the strap attaches but it was easily sewn. Like I said, it's a heavy drum!).
If you want to carry your drum to the side rather then in front then this strap might not be for you - the 2 straps are not independent (they're really a single strap sliding on a ring on the back of the yoke) so you can't just tighten one side and loosen the other. The drum will keep wanting to center itself in front of you. For a little bit to the side (in front of one leg) it works fine.
One thing to be aware of - being neoprene, it will absorb sweat and start to smell funky after a while unless you wash it every so often.

This took a while to ship, but once it arrived I quickly noticed the fine quality of the drum as promised. However ( I'm sure measurements are on the ad), it is SO tiny. My 2 yr old fits it between his legs easily, but really needs something bigger. It stores easily in his small book shelf.
