Background
My first snare stand was a Ludwig snare stand that I outgrew due to the old-school features (featureless really). When I first started upgrading hardware "back in the day" I was a real fan of Tama due to the quality / heavy-duty nature and the reasonable prices. As I got a few more snare drums I thought that Tama was going to get my money, but I checked out Pearl and was pleasantly surprised that they had all the features I needed and were more competitively priced than the Tama so I bought two Pearl S-900 stands and never looked back.
Fast forward twenty *cough* something years and I found myself with a newly purchased TD-20SX and a hope to recycle as much hardware from the old days as possible. I dragged out one of the venerable Pearl S-900 stands that served me so well but found that it didn't really function like I was hoping for with such a small diameter as the found on the PD-125X, so I went in search of a new snare stand. I decided to start with Pearl as I had good luck with them before and was really pleased to find the S-2000 unit, and well quite honestly this shopper was hooked.
Cost
This has a steep list price like most of the offerings in the Pearl "Advanced Hardware Systems" and may frighten many away with the list price; luckily it can be found here at Amazon for a whole lot less. I do think the unique features make it a true contender and well worth the price.
Features
The most likeable feature for this hardware is the telescoping snare basket or the "All Fit Snare Arms," which allows individual adjustment of the arms from 10" to 16". That's an incredible amount of flexibility; imagine that it can accommodate anything from a popcorn snare to marching or orchestral drums without changing the angle of the arms! To accommodate smaller diameter drums you typically have to crank-up the triangle nut on the threaded center post, which then puts the arms and basket claws into an odd angle. On some stands the claws may contact the smaller diameter snare shell rather than the rim - not a good thing in my opinion. Additionally it may result in having the snare higher than you would like if you tend to sit low (like me). As a way to finish the snare arm features I'll make note of the "Air Suspension" rubber tips on the end of the snare arms, which is a great way to snug up the snare without choking it out. With that in mind, it also increases the flexibility in adjustments between the triangle nut / basket angle/ main center post height.
The plastic triangle nut is large and easy to manipulate. The "Gyro-Lock Tilter" being infinitely adjustable offers more flexibility than a troop of Chinese acrobats and is easily manipulated with its large metal wing nut. The height adjustment and tripod adjustment are all pretty stand fare as well, the legs expand out to 16" and don't interfere with my double bass pedals. The larger rubber feet are also equipped with a retractable spike feature should you ever find your snare creeping on the carpet -- a bit overkill but what the heck, it may come in handy as a self-defense weapon should you be accosted during a load-in or out or the singer decides to snag one of your groupies.
Conclusion
I am usually plagued with buyer's remorse on my purchases but I am extremely happy with this one, no second guessing, works great, has better features than other manufacturers and allows me to answer "that" question: Would I make the same selection if I had to do it all over again? YES!
**Note, I have been using this snare stand for better than 6-months at the time of the review and I'm as happy with as the day it got delivered.**
