(More customer reviews)I was looking to round out my percussion collection with some hand drums and soon realized that Toca was the way to go. I wanted something small but with a good sound and I've never really owned one before. I'd played on more ordinary looking djembes too, so I was really surprised at how much I love this drum. Despite its size it feels substantial and weighty in my hand and the carved wood is beautiful, giving it just the right amount of embellishment. The rope feels strong and tight and all the loops and knots are almost exactly evenly spaced and symmetrical. The color is gorgeous and the pictures don't do it proper justice. Clearly a lot of work and care went into the making of this drum, as it should be.
It's got a bright, crisp high end sound and a nice little boom at the low end.I can't wait to learn how to tune it, the instructions are confusing and printed on this colored, textured paper that makes it hard to read. If you've never done it before, like me, you'll probably just want to leave it under a light bulb for a few hours until it tightens, at least until you get better at tuning it. It was pretty well tuned when it arrived though, so it hasn't been an issue yet. Right now I tune my other drums to the djembe.
It comes with a neat little bag to carry it in, which I've actually used. Right now it's my favorite drum; I keep it near the futon where I can just pick it up while I'm relaxing or daydreaming and come up with a little groove. So many drums, like my congas and my set, are big and cumbersome to carry around, so it's nice to have one that you can take with you and that doesn't require a stand to play. I am now definitely more interested in getting a larger djembe, since this one sounds so good.
It's also a good drum for a kid, in terms of size and quality. If your kid is beyond cheap plastic drums and truly loves to play, this is just right. But it's by no means a toy, and it totally fulfilled my expectations as a good, solid addition to my growing collection of percussion instruments.
