(More customer reviews)I bought this beater on the suggestion of a music store's drum tech to replace one that finally failed -- still, it may have been his Hello Kitty T-shirt, or the early-onset halitosis, but I wasn't fully convinced by his recommendation. So, in addition to this beater, I bought a DW Drums SM101 Two-Way Bass Drum Beater and a Trick Pro 1-V Detonator Beater, Black, just in case.
My playing style: I kick hard. Put to the test, this DW hardcore beater has been great. Adjusting the head gives a fuller "whoomp" sound, or if you let the solid core through a little more, it has very nice attack. A couple of things: if your primary style is quick attack kicks (speed metal, punk), these may not be for you -- they seem to come off the head a little slower than other models. Also, if the solid core of the beater is too visible, you'll dent your head pretty quickly. The speed is better with the solid core poking out, but your bass head will look like it came home from a drunken bender at a cage fight tournament. Either use a pad or readjust the solid core so it's more within the foam head. If you're looking for something that can handle the rigors of anything short of metal, or if you play a variety of styles, the head adjusts well to produce different tones. I've had this beater on the kit ever since I bought it and I haven't busted a head, and I haven't yet tried the other two beaters I bought. The sound is dynamic enough that I have no need to look any further.
