(More customer reviews)I purchased these sticks looking for a stick of reasonable quality with which to use primarily in practice.
I usually practice 6-7 days a week for about one to one and a half hours. My preferred stick is the Pro Mark Japanese oak stick of which a brick of 12 pairs of 5A will usually last me about 3 months.
I received 12 pairs of these sticks on Feb. 9. The sticks are listed as 5A's but have the shaft thickness and feel of a 5B, approaching a 2B. The finish is a matte and grip is ok, however for an oak stick of this size, they are suprisingly light. My Promark's are smaller in shaft diameter, yet heavier in feel. In examining the grain of the sticks, I noted that there was little if no attention to having the grain run the length of the stick for strength. On the contrary, the grain in some places transverses the stick. So, I knew that I was going to be in for some trouble with longevity.
At the two practice sessions that I have had since receiving the sticks, I have blown through 4 pairs so far. Usually the break occurs at approximately 3 inches from the tip wherein the entire top of the stick flys off like a stage from the space shuttle. In fact, while practicing this morning I noted a "Sticks by the Pound " miracle occur. After throwing down another decapitated stick, I grabbed another from my bag on the fly and after playing through less than one five count measure, the stick broke at 2 inches from the bottom in the palm of my hand. Perhaps "Oak" is Chinese for "Balsa wood".
If you are looking for a stick for practice look elsewhere. If you enjoy watching the explosion of cheap wood,(for I now know how they made it happen in Martial Arts movies), you need look no further.
