I was looking for an upgrade to my son's Yamaha HS 650 Hi-Hat stand and I was impressed with the Yammy 700-series snare stand I had bought. So naturally I looked at the Yamaha HS 740A. What makes it an upgrade are, as far as I can tell, the Spring Tension Knob and the adjustable legs.
The Spring Tension Knob allows you to adjust the resistance of the foot pedal, making it more precise. The adjustable legs make it easier, by loosening two knobs to rotate the tripod legs, to fit your stand in among all the other parts of the drumset.
Other upgrades over the HS 650 include a memory position clamp (for minimum cymbal height) and beefier construction.
So overall, similar outline to the HS 650 which will make it familiar and enhanced controls which make it more musical and convenient to use.
