Smokers Relight Deux (WAV, REX, Reason Refills) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)The first Smokers collection quickly became a user-standard, filling every inch of its product with usable, well-crafted loops and loads of deconstructed hits. All of the hype for Smokers 1 was for good reason.
No surprise that this sequel gets the same media treatment, much of it deserved. But a closer look at the collection exposes a slight flaw that keeps it from a 5-star rating: the beats are too much alike over too much of the disc. Sure, the drum SOUNDS are different, but the beats from folder to folder are mostly cut from the "Keep On Movin'"/Lisa Stansfield cloth. I'd have liked more variety in the rhythms themselves, more backbeats, more play. Some people would call this kind of one-beat regimen "working within the genre." Sure...if the genre is two songs deep.
That said, they compensate a great deal by offering "dropped" variations of the main beat (notice the singular) and more one shots than you can shake your hard drive at. if you like building your beats, this collection gives you some great fodder. It's a worthy addenudum to the original collection, if not quite the classic stand-alone that the previous incarnation was.
A final note: it's horrendously overpriced considering these flaws.

PROPELLERHEAD Reason Drum Kits 2 ReFill ( Windows/Macintosh ) Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)Reason Drum Kits 2.0 Refill is an incredible piece of software. It can be as simple or as complicated as you like. I've used it to create simple drum kits for a basic drum track in 10 minutes or less, and have also done things with this software as complex as creating a fully-functional drum kit that simulated 11 different mic-ing positions. The quality of the samples is highly impressive - every detail is captured - and the depth of possibilities and kit combinations with this kit is beyond imagination. Only bad parts are - it takes up a decent chunk of memory and RAM, and the naming conventions of the samples are confusing at first (but they are very easy to figure out after using them a few times. The manual thoroughly covers these naming conventions, however, so if you take the time to read that short section, it will make a lot of sense).
Note: this refill is for highly realistic acoustic drums. This refill will do you no good for hip-hop/rap drum samples, unless you're doing something really old school. This refill is for the people who don't have the time, resources, or money to record live drums, or wish to make a drum track for practice, composition, tracking, or mixing purposes. For hip-hop/rap kits, the ones that come with Reason 3 or 4 are excellent (if you know how to manipulate them).
