Carbosticks, Carbon Fiber Drumsticks, 7ACTLW, Large Tip, Medium Weight, White, Rock - 6 PAIRS Review

(More customer reviews)I wasn't around at the time, but the repercussions were still being felt when I entered the arena following the gory battle between dedicated calf hitters and those mamby-pamby plastic tappers. I am viewing a very similar scenario regarding wood versus synthetic drum sticks. Being a heavy hitter, I have been continuously plagued by the ever decreasing quality of Hickory available to stick manufacturers. Before I deserted the arboreal realms I was achieving less than 3 gigs out of a pair of Pro-mark 7A, having abandoned Vic et al along the way. I use light sticks and hit the drums hard; and because they are Gretsch - with those big fat die-cast rims and super thin shells, the result is astonishing! Then I discovered Carbosticks, and after less than a week of gigs my hands had completely forgotten the wood. Nothing ambiguous here boys and girls, let's constrain ourselves to the issue in hand! I am happy to extol the many additional virtues of these sticks but suffice to say at this point that I am now using one pair per 50+ gigs. Apart from their longevity, which initially was the primary consideration, these sticks can offer so many variations on the original theme that the mind boggles. First of all, the weight can be varied so you can have a light, medium or heavy version (same dimensions but different weight) of your preferred model. Secondly: the balance of each weight variation can be shifted to the front or the back; so you can have a light version but forward weighted which will give a slightly stronger downstroke; set the balance to the rear on a heavy stick and it feels substantial in your hand, but the downstroke is eased by the rear balance. As if this wasn't enough, you can vary the size of the tip as well! Personally, I love having variations on my favoured model because different bands, different songs in each band, and different room acoustics can all demand a change of power and an alternative pair of sticks can make all the difference. After using them for four years now I can also tell you that the myth about cymbal damage is just that: a myth. I've got medium and light 16" crashes at the front, which I hit hard, and they show absolutely no sign of fatigue. You may think I must work for the manufacturers - but I don't, I just feel that the days of wood are dwindling along with the trees and here we have technology giving us an improved alternative and I haven't even mentioned the reason why a German engineer came to design and develop these sticks: well, it was because he developed Carpel Tunnel Syndrome and his quack told him he must stop playing the drums as the shock of stick impact was doing the damage. He decided, obviously, that rather than abandon his beloved drumming he would design a stick that displayed significant shock absorption - which he did: these sticks transmit 80% less shock to the hands and wrists than wood. Enough said?
Incidentally, they also wick away moisture far better than wood.
