(More customer reviews)I picked this up for $50 elsewhere. This is a great "in-between" snare when a piccolo is too much high end but a 14" snare is too deep. This has the warmth and body of a 5x14 snare with the pop you expect from a 3x13 piccolo.
I enjoy this snare so much that it has replaced my old trusty Ludwig Supra-Phonic 400 (chrome over brass) as my primary snare. It's very versitile and can handle rock, hip hop, jazz, fusion, classic rock. This will be used on an upcoming session.
The only downside is the standard strainer (Ludwig P-85 type) and the YESS mount. The strainer isn't a big deal, especially for a drum of this price and it is a tried and true strainer design. The YESS mount might be great for those looking to use this as a side snare. With a clamp and arm, this could easily be affixed to a double-braced cymbal stand. I'd prefer to not have the mount and have more wood on that part of the shell.
Those are really minor nuisances for what is overall a great snare drum at a rock bottom price. Even the 'stock' Yamaha heads sound fine on this, though I will throw on some Aquarian skins once this batter head is beat up (which probably won't be too long from now).
